  • Toyota includes a huge spread of standard safety features like pre-collision assist

There isn’t much to say about Toyota’s midsize sedan that hasn’t already been said. The 2022 Toyota Camry is the latest iteration of an American four-door staple. It’s about as ever-present as the sunrise, and as reliable as the sunrise too. This is everything you need to know about the 2022 Toyota Camry before buying one.

2022 Toyota Camry specs and fuel economy

To be honest, there’s a simply dizzying array of Camry trim levels and options. You can have yours however you want it, all the way up to a nearly $40K fully loaded Camry. You can check our guide on the best Camry trims here for the full deal. As for here, let’s just focus on the engines. From there, you can add varying degrees of luxury depending on your budget.

The Camry starts with a 2.5L four-cylinder making 206 hp/186 lb-ft through a torque-converted automatic transmission. In keeping with the 2022 Toyota Camry’s economic roots, it’ll get 28 mpg city. The base engine can be paired with both FWD and AWD, unlike the Camry’s 301 hp/267 lb-ft V6. That’s only going to net you around 22 mpg city, but you’ll be thankful for the extra shove. Finally, there’s a 208hp Camry Hybrid that’ll do 51 mpg in the city, but only with the front wheels.

Toyota Camry safety features

Obviously, the Toyota Camry is absurdly safe. The IIHS handed down its Top Safety Pick+ award for the ultra-safe Toyota. And the NHTSA didn’t skimp on the praise either, giving the 2022 Toyota Camry a 5-star crash safety rating (out of 5 of course).

The Toyota Camry of course has plenty of standard safety tricks and features. Toyota’s Safety Sense suite comes standard with pre-collision braking, lane-keep assist, and automatic headlights with high beams. I should note that I really dislike Toyota’s pre-collision braking. The way it’s wired up means the pedal moves for you when the car detects a collision. Nothing is scarier than having the thing you’re using to stop moving out from under you. Toyota also includes their lane-centering software in some trims, which keeps you in your lane while cruise control is active.

Interior space and cargo capacity

As far as practicality is concerned, the 2022 Toyota Camry’s interior is about as good as it gets in the midsize sedan segment. There’s plenty of room to keep all your small items at hand in the driver’s compartment, and the brand thoughtfully includes spots for oversized water bottles in the door cards, a personal favorite of mine. However, the boot in the Camry is smaller than the Honda Accord, coming in at 15 cubic feet. Toyota also managed to eke out 42 inches of legroom in the front and 38 inches in the rear.

2022 Camry technology

I’ve spoken at length about Toyota’s infotainment before, but I’ll give you the cliff notes. It’s old. Thankfully, Toyota will be refreshing it soon for the Camry and other models. The 2021 Camry XLE, XSE, and TRD all get the new 9-inch unit for 2021. Otherwise, the unit’s saving grace is the inclusion of Apple Carplay and Android Auto as standard. Audi is fed in via a 6-speaker system, and JBL built a 9-speaker unit for the XLE and XSE V6 2022 Toyota Camry.

Which Toyota Camry trim should you buy?

The 2022 Toyota Camry LE starts around $26K, but we’d go with the 2022 Camry SE trim level for $27,500. That nets you all of Toyota’s standard features, in addition to some nicer options from further up the range like heated seats. The SE trim is the best mix of the things the Toyota Camry does well without getting expensive. We also recommend the $27,000 Hybrid for the fuel-conscious. With a mix of strong safety scores and abundant trim levels its hard to go wrong with the Camry.
