Now, it’s time to see which sedan does it better, the 2022 Toyota Camry or the 2022 Hyundai Sonata.

2022 Toyota Camry

• Pros: Staggering variety, solid reliability and materials choice
• Cons: Staggering variety makes choosing hard, infotainment needs an update ASAP

It’s best to pay homage to the king first. The 2022 Toyota Camry is the latest iteration of America’s best-selling mid-size sedan. Part of that success is no doubt due to the staggering variety offered by the Camry. Spread across three engines and two transmission options, the Camry covers a staggering array of nine trim levels. In short, there’s a Camry for everyone. There’s even a sporty TRD model for those looking for a little Japanese sports sedan spice in their life. It’s also the cheapest way into the V6 engine at $33,385.

However, the real winners here are the AWD models. Short of something like a Subaru Legacy or Mazda 6, you’ll be hard-pressed to find an AWD sedan that isn’t an Audi S4, and at a bargain price to boot. Those start just under $30,000 at $27,720. Unfortunately, the newest Camry models aren’t subject to Toyota’s new infotainment, a huge letdown. While the Camry finishes strong with its value, safety, and comfort features, the automatic transmission is a letdown.

2022 Hyundai Sonata

• Pros: DCT in N-Line models, new-age infotainment
• Cons: Iffy dealership experiences, N-Line models are costly

That isn’t an issue for the 2022 Hyundai Sonata. Or at least it isn’t for the 2022 Hyundai Sonata N-Line models, which get the brand’s new dual-clutch from the Hyundai Veloster N. However, those N-Line models do push things well into “big money” territory dominated by faster and more stylish hatches like the Golf GTI. But the rest of the lineup takes the faults of the 2022 Toyota Camry and improves on them (save for the AWD, a Camry exclusive). Hyundai’s infotainment isn’t Tesla good, but it is a huge improvement over Toyota’s, for example.

Then there’s the mid-size sedan’s interior. Simply put, it’s a much nicer place to be than the Camry, and often for less money. Ventilated seats are a huge plus here, but the driving position is a bit high. On the outside, the 2022 Hyundai Sonata appears much fresher than the now-aged looks of the 2022 Toyota Camry.

Which mid-size sedan is right for you?

As for which one we’d pick? It’s safe to say the king has been dethroned. Even without the AWD of the Camry, the Sonata manages to do just about everything the Toyota does but better. Plus, the Sonata’s warranty means we don’t care how reliable it is (it’s very reliable). Toyota had better watch out.
