The Toyota Prius has been an icon in the hybrid-electric world for almost two decades now, and while it’s not the flashiest, fastest, or most potent hybrid on the market, it still has a lot to offer. This hatchback has been an award-winning hybrid since it first landed in 2000. An affordable price, impressive driving range, and family-friendly size make the Prius the best hybrid car to buy in 2022.

Prius affordability and reliability

Starting prices for 2022 Prius models range from $24,625 for the cheapest trim and $32,820 for a fully loaded Prius. These prices make the Prius one of the most affordable new hybrids for 2022 and one of the best hybrid options for budget buyers, new drivers, or families. Check out full Prius pricing and specs here.

Toyota cars are known for their reliability, and the Prius is no exception. It’s more likely that you’ll be able to take a Prius to 200,000 miles than hybrid cars from other brands.

Here is where the Prius shines. The 2022 Prius offers up to 56 mpg combined and 58 mpg in city-only driving. Though the Prius is one of the oldest hybrids on the market, it’s still one of the most efficient.

An 11.4-gallon gas tank means that the 2022 Toyota Prius should be able to cruise for about 660 miles on a full tank without needing to stop for a refuel. Like all-electric vehicles, your hybrid car’s range may vary based on driving habits, conditions, and other factors. You may see more or fewer miles on a tank of gas when driving a Prius.

Under the hood, the 2022 Prius comes standard with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine producing 121 horsepower. Most models come with front-wheel drive, but an all-wheel drive Prius is available.

Interior room and cargo space make the 2022 Prius hybrid car a great daily driver

Impressive interior space is just one thing that makes the Prius one of the best hybrid cars for 2022, but it’s high on the list. The Prius seats five passengers and offers spacious and comfortable seats.

The 2022 Prius is also one of the hatchbacks with the most real-world cargo space. Cars.com hand-measured the storage area behind the rear seat of a recent Prius model and found 13.1 cubic feet of cargo space. However, Toyota claims up to 27.4 cubic feet of total cargo space in the back, and 50.7 cubic feet with the rear seat folded.

The Toyota Prius doesn’t skimp on the essentials

The base 2022 Toyota Prius L Eco may not be lavishly appointed—one might even call it barebones—but you do get something in this entry-level hybrid car. The Prius offers a standard 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, three USB ports, and soft cloth seating.

A fully-loaded Toyota Prius does offer up quite a bit more. The essentials are complemented by the finer things, with a JBL stereo system, 11-inch touchscreen, and an available power moonroof.

Does the 2022 Toyota Prius qualify for tax credits?

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the standard 2022 Prius does not qualify for a federal tax credit. Only the 2022 Prius Prime Plug-In Hybrid is eligible for the full credit of $4,502—a wildly specific number.

A 20-year-old nameplate is still going strong

After 20 years on the road, the Toyota Prius has built quite a reputation. Its name has been and still is synonymous with eco-friendliness, and it remains a top choice for drivers who want to reduce their carbon footprint but aren’t ready to commit to an EV.

It’s little wonder why the 2022 Toyota Prius won U.S. News’ Best Hybrid Car for 2022 award, but we wonder how long it’ll hold onto its crown as the electrified vehicle market rapidly grows.
