The Toyota Prius is synonymous with eco-friendly hybrid cars. However, years have passed since the first Prius conquered the market, and the little Toyota has competition. One of the hybrids vying for the Toyota’s crown is the Honda Insight. So does the 2022 Toyota Prius hold its own against the 2022 Honda Insight? 

Is the 2022 Toyota Prius more fuel-efficient than the 2022 Honda Insight?

Both hybrids are very efficient, however, the 2022 Toyota Prius is slightly more economical than the 2022 Honda Insight. The Insight manages a respectable 55 mpg city and 49 mpg at highway speeds. However, the Prius delivers 58 mpg city and 53 mpg highway. Both cars are fuel sippers, but the Toyota hybrid wins the economy battle. 

Is the 2022 Honda Insight more comfortable than the 2022 Toyota Prius?

According to TrueCar, the Honda Insight is more spacious than the Prius. That is good news for the five passengers that the Insight is rated to carry. However, the Prius has above-average cargo volume and much more than the comparable Insight. The Toyota boasts 27.4 cubic feet of cargo volume compared to the Honda’s 15.1 cubic feet. 

Both vehicles offer 60/40 folding seatbacks in the back. Also, both hybrids offer higher trims with nicer materials like leather. However, the Honda Insight offers five trims to the Prius’ two. 

Is Prius safer than the Honda Insight? 

Both cars got a five-star overall crashworthiness rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, the 2022 Honda Insight is safer than the Toyota Prius in specific categories. For instance, the Honda gets five stars in every frontal crash category, while the Toyota gets only four stars for frontal crash testing. 

Furthermore, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also gave the 2022 Honda Insight higher scores overall. The Insight got higher scores in headlight performance and a passenger side-impact test. 

Finally, the Insight offers standard safety technology that the Prius doesn’t. For instance, TrueCar says the Honda model offers standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Toyota hybrid doesn’t.  

Is the Honda Insight cheaper than the Prius?

The 2022 Toyota Prius is barely cheaper than the comparable 2022 Honda Insight. According to U.S. News, the Prius manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) is $24,625. However, the new Insight’s MSRP is $25,760. So while the Honda is more expensive, it is not by much.  

Which hybrid should you buy? 

The 2022 Toyota Prius and 2022 Honda Insight are quite evenly matched in the segment. However, if you care more about safety scores and features, you should buy the Honda Insight. The new Honda Insight is also faster and (arguably) better looking than the Toyota Prius. However, the Prius is slightly more fuel-efficient and just barely cheaper than the Insight.
