2022 Toyota Supra vs. 2022 Ford Mustang: Unlikely Comparison
Few sports cars have made a splash like the latest Toyota Supra designs. However, the Toyota and BMW collaboration may have met its match with the original horsepower-happy pony car, the Ford Mustang. Although the two vehicles are as different as night and day, they both exist to put a smile on your face. So which car wins a speed showdown, the 2022 Toyota Supra or the 2022 Ford Mustang?
Is the 2022 Ford Mustang or the 2022 Toyota Supra faster?
The base engine offerings of each car are a bit anemic, at least when compared with their bigger siblings. The Supra 2.0L four-cylinder model produces 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. That doesn’t seem like much, but considering the Toyota Supra weighs in at around 3,200 lbs. That’s right; the Supra weighs 450 lbs less than the pony car.
However, the 2022 Ford Mustang EcoBoost makes up for it in power and panache. An EcoBoost Premium produces a much happier 330 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. Despite all this power, the EcoBoost loses the sprint to sixty miles per hour, requiring 5.5 seconds to the 2022 Toyota Supra 2.0’s quick 4.9.
What if we kick it up a notch?
At the other end of the trim spectrum, the 3.0L equipped Supra has the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach 1 to battle. Hagerty hosted a drag race between the two with an added adversary, the hotly anticipated 2023 Nissan Z. The 2022 Toyota Supra produces the least horsepower of the bunch, with a respectable 382. However, the Mustang Mach 1 makes a stratospheric 480 horsepower but weighs 3,868 lbs to the Supra 3.0’s 3,400 lbs.
The results are very, very close. The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach 1 edged out the 2022 Toyota Supra in Hagerty’s test by a tiny margin. Both cars sprinted to sixty in just 3.8 seconds with a quarter-mile time of 12.1 seconds, but the Mustang just barely took the win. The Nissan Z, however, lost the race by a negligible gap. The incoming Z required 4.0 seconds to hit sixty and 12.3 seconds to cover the quarter-mile.
Although both cars are constantly evolving into more powerful vehicles, it would be unfair to compare the Supra to the range-topping Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. The monstrous Shelby produces 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque from its appropriately named Predator engine. Consequently, the Shelby will catapult itself to sixty in just three-and-a-half or fewer seconds.
Which car is better, the Ford Mustang or the Toyota Supra?
The 2022 Ford Mustang offers several trims and options, from a moderately efficient EcoBoost to a savagely powerful Shelby GT500KR. In comparison, the 2022 Toyota Supra offers a 2.0L and 3.0L engine with various trim levels to wrap consumers in BMW-engineered refinement. The fact is, the two cars are very different. The Mustang is a muscle car with heritage, a small back seat, and a usable trunk. On the other hand, the mold-shattering Toyota Supra is a purpose-built sports car.
