It’s surprising to find the 2022 Toyota Tundra and 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 near the bottom of any list of best full-size 2022 pickup trucks since both trucks usually rank near the top. So, why are these two contenders tied for fourth place from U.S. News, with only the 2022 Nissan Titan behind them?

Best full-size 2022 pickup trucks

U.S. News ranks the 2022 Toyota Tundra and the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 in a tie for fourth place behind the 2022 Ram 1500 in first, the 2022 Ford F-150 in second, and the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 in third. Ultimately, the 2022 Nissan Titan is the only full-size truck that ranks lower in the overview of six 2022 full-size pickup trucks.

Three electric pickups also made the U.S. News list. However, there isn’t enough data to rank them. The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is the lowest-priced electric truck listed, with a starting price of just under $40,000. Next is the 2022 Rivian R1T, priced between $67,500 and $73,000. Finally, General Motors brushed off the Hummer name and brought it back as the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup with a starting price well over $100K.

2022 Toyota Tundra

The 2022 Toyota Tundra, featuring a complete redesign for 2022, is a nice truck by any standards. The Tundra offers two V6 powertrains, each mounted to the same 10-speed automatic transmission. First, the standard twin-turbocharged V6 with 389 horsepower delivers up to 18 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. Next is a hybrid powertrain that pairs the twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor for 437 horsepower. The Tundra’s fuel economy will likely improve with the hybrid option, but those numbers are currently unavailable.

The Tundra’s 2022 model year redesign includes an updated interior, but it still lags behind the higher-rated competitors in the class, especially in lower trim levels. The standard infotainment system consists of an 8-inch touchscreen with a six-speaker stereo system in double cab trucks or nine speakers in the CrewMax model. Automatic climate control and power rear windows round out the Tundra’s list of standard feature highlights.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is a nice pickup truck, but it’s not as strong as its rivals. Tundra’s limited engine options point to a decision to limit its towing and payload capacity. When properly equipped, the Tundra can tow up to 12,000 pounds and has a payload capacity capped at 1,940 pounds. While suitable for most drivers, these numbers are substantially lower than those of the class’ front runners.

2022 Chevy Silverado 1500

The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 also enjoyed a refresh for the model year but not a complete redesign like the Tundra. Instead, the refresh includes an updated interior, a new exterior style, an updated infotainment system, and more standard driver-assistance features. While the refresh has closed the gap between the Silverado and the competition, Chevrolet still has some work to do, especially considering the interior finishes on lower-trim level Silverados.

Silverado 1500 engine options range from a turbocharged four-cylinder, two gas-powered V8s, and an inline-six-cylinder turbo-diesel. The turbocharged four-cylinder gets 19 mpg on city streets, 22 mpg on the highway, and produces 310 horsepower backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. Of the two V8 options, the smaller 5.3-liter makes 355 horsepower with a fuel economy rating of 16 city mpg and 21 highway mpg, while the larger 6.2-liter pumps out 420 hp with only a 1 mpg fuel economy penalty. Opting for the 3.0-liter straight-six results in 277 horsepower with 23 city mpg and 31 highway. Any engine choice other than the four-cylinder comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Depending on its configuration, the Silverado can tow up to 13,300 pounds and carry up to 2,270 pounds of payload. While having superior specs to the Tundra, those values fall short of the class leaders’ capabilities.
