There are a few reports of people being disappointed once they receive their 2022 Toyota Tundra models due to quality issues. We don’t want this to be true for the new Toyota Tundra, so it’s time to put our detective hats on. Let’s investigate this problem. 

Does the 2022 Toyota Tundra have quality issues? 

Maybe. According to Auto Evolution, one fan received their 2022 Toyota Tundra with a few quality issues. Adam George got a new Toyota Tundra TRD Sport with the Advanced Technology Package, Premium Audio Package, Panoramic View Monitor, and blind-spot indicating mirrors. 

With these added options, the 5.5-foot bed and crew cab, the truck almost reached $60,000. While it looks great, shortly after receiving his Tundra, Adam shared, “I’m disappointed with the fit and finish. Every time I look over it closely, I find more components that probably are on the edge of being in tolerance.” 

That quote is a little puzzling but refers to the weather stripping on the rear passenger window that’s not seated properly, a massive gap between the right and middle section of the rear bumper, and a slightly misaligned body panel. 

After a month of ownership, Adam discovered that the rear seat doesn’t latch in place, the windshield doesn’t seem to be correctly sealed due to excessive wind noise in one area, the rear seat-belt indicator goes off when no one is in the rear, the steering wheel controls popped out of place, and the auto-braking system activates on inclines, possibly mistaking it for a wall. 

Is the 2022 Tundra reliable? 

Adam’s 2022 Toyota Tundra issues are pretty concerning, but it’s not uncommon for issues to arrive when new generations of vehicles emerge. It’s possible that models produced a little later won’t have these problems. 

Consumer Reports gave the 2022 Toyota Tundra a reliability rating of three out of five, which is average. This rating is based on Toyota’s brand history and the previous generation of the Tundra. 

Previous Tundra owners used a Consumer Reports survey to report issues they faced in 17 potential trouble spots ranging from the engine, paint, electronics, transmission, and more. The biggest problems seem to be related to the fuel system, suspension, and climate system from the 2019 model. 

The 2020 and 2021 Toyota Tundra models have fewer complaints, indicating that these problems may have been corrected. The Tundra used to have a perfect reliability score, but redesign years typically cause a tumble. 

Do other 2022 Tundra models have issues? 

Other 2022 Toyota Tundra owners have discovered potential quality issues. Some people found that the driver-side door lock randomly began acting erratically by unlocking and locking multiple times. But Toyota engineers already noted that an out-of-spec plastic component or molding machine was the cause. 

Also, the 3.4-liter engine may have wastegate problems. There are multiple reports of wastegate malfunctions. The wastegate controls boost pressure by bypassing a controlled amount of exhaust gas from interacting with the turbine wheel. 

If it fails to function correctly, the pressure inside the turbo could oscillate rapidly. It’s unclear if this is a mechanical or software problem. The cab has to be disassembled from the chassis to repair the wastegate. 

Plus, dealerships are reporting that the parts required to repair the wastegates are back-ordered for about 30 days, so this problematic issue may take a long time to repair. 

Don’t let these problems scare you away from the 2022 Toyota Tundra yet. The door lock issue has already been solved. While other quality issues may stem from preproduction problems, they may have been solved as well. We will keep an eye on the Tundra to see if it gets better or worse.
