The battle between big trucks continues to rage as the Toyota Tundra adds fuel to the flames. While the 2022 Toyota Tundra is working to outrank the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150, it just gained a massive advantage in the safety department. 

How safe is the 2022 Toyota Tundra? 

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is an incredibly safe pickup truck. In fact, it’s an Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+. This is the highest accolade that a vehicle can receive. Plus, the Tundra is the only truck to earn this title. 

To become a Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn a Good score in each crash safety test. It also requires a Superior or Advanced rating based on the crash avoidance system. To earn the Top Safety Pick+ rating, the headlights must earn an Acceptable or Good score. 

The Tundra racked up plenty of ‘Good’rankings in its crash tests. The Ford F150 and Ram 1500 got a lower Top Safety Pick Score in comparison. Also, they missed out on the Plus designation because their headlights didn’t earn Acceptable or Good results. 

The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra fell short because they earned a Marginal score in the passenger-side small overlap test. Also, the Sierra got a Weak headlight designation. 

So, the Tundra is officially the safest full-size pickup truck available. Plus, its headlights provide the most visibility in the dark. 

How reliable is the Tundra? 

The 2022 Toyota Tundra has an above-average reliability ranking. The previous generation had a perfect score, but the rating dropped because the Tundra has new engine options, suspension upgrades, and a new exterior design. 

It’s a little early to tell how well the new Toyota Tundra will last. The truck needs a little more time to accrue more mileage. However, J.D. Power gave it a score of 86 out of 100. Anything between 91 to 100 is considered to be the best, while 81 to 90 is great, and 70 to 80 is average. 

Anything below 70 is considered to be fair or below average. The Tundra still ranks as one of the most reliable options available, and the Ram 1500 is its toughest rival. But the Tundra sits comfortably ahead of the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado 1500. 

The outgoing Touta Tundra can easily make it past 300,000 miles with the proper care and maintenance. Some Tundras have even made it past 1,000,000 miles, which bolsters confidence with the new model. 

What safety features come with the Tundra? 

With the 2022 Toyota Tundra, you get standard forward collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. This is a value-packed list!
