The battle of the big trucks just started heating up again. The 2022 Toyota Tundra iForce Max is here to battle the 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid. Before the new Tundra made its debut, the F-150 Hybrid didn’t have real competition.

It’s a little bit surprising that there’s a lack of competition among hybrid trucks. But the Ram hybrid system consists of a 48-volt motor generator that doesn’t produce enough power. Also, the Chevy Silverado hybrid bit the dust they have been focusing on an electric option.

Does the Tundra Hybrid or F-150 Hybrid have more power?

The 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid and Ford F-150 Hybrid have a similar setup. Both trucks use a twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor placed between the engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission.

In the Tundra, the 3.4-liter V6 provides 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. In the Ford F-150, the 3.5-liter engine generates 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque. So, theTundra Hybrid has the most power.

Ford placed a 1.5-kWh lithium-ion battery under the truck bed. The Tundra’s 1.5-kWh nickel-metal hydride battery is mounted under the back seat. This may impact the cargo capacity a little.

With the F-150 Hybrid, you can tow up to 12,700 lbs and carry a payload of up to 2,120 lbs. The Toyota Tundra iForce Max can tow up to 12,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,940 lbs. So, the F-150 has more muscle.

The Ford F-150 PowerBoost also has an advantage with its Power Pro OnBoard generator. The engine can spin the electric motor as a generator, allowing people to power campsites, worksites, and every their homes during a blackout.

Is the F-150 Hybrid or Tundra iForce Max greener?

The official ratings for the 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid haven’t been released. But it’s expected to get an EPA-estimated 25 mpg. The 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.

Once you drive above 18 mpg in the Tundra, then the gas engine is always running. This is also the case in Tow/Haul mode. But the F-150 will stay in EV mode with speeds up to 50 mph. So, the F-150 could be more fuel-efficient.

Pricing for the 2022 Tundra hasn’t been released. The iForce Max Hybrid powertrain is only available with higher trim levels such as the Limited, Platinum, and 1794 trims. The 2021 Toyota Tundra Limited begins at about $42,840.

You can get started with the hybrid powertrain on a base XL Ford F-150 work truck for about $44,000. The price of the Tundra Limited may increase due to the new powertrain options and total redesign

We’re still waiting to learn more about the 2022 Tundra iForce Max Hybrid, but so far, the Ford F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid seems to have the edge. We will keep you updated as we learn more. The new Toyota Tundra is expected to reach dealerships by December.
