Finally, the Toyota Tundra is starting to move up in the rankings. The 2022 Toyota Tundra seemed to have a slow start, but it’s starting to gain attention with a brand new redesign. In fact, it just jumped past the Chevy Silverado 1500.

Drum roll, please, the results are in. The 2022 Toyota Tundra ranks higher than the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 on the U.S.News list of best full-size pickup trucks for 2022. The Tundra landed in third place while the Silverado came in fifth.

The Tundra has a score of 8.2, while the Silverado earned a 7.9. The 2021 GMC Sierra came in fourth at 8.0, while the 2022 Ford F-150 is in second place with a score of 8.7, and the 2022 Ram 1500 is the best truck with a score of 9.1. This is one of the rare times where the Tundra made it to the top three.

U.S.News ranks vehicles based on credible reviews and critic options from newspapers, magazines, and automotive websites. The performance, ride quietly, interior, cargo space, build quality, comfort, safety, reliability, fuel economy, and critics’ rating go into assigning each score.

Why is the Tundra ranked above the Silverado?

The 2022 Toyota Tundra came out of the gate, flexing a full redesign with exterior and interior upgrades to enhance comfort, power, and convenience.

It has new powerful engines, a composed ride, responsive handling, comfortable seats with plenty of cargo space, and a user-friendly infotainment system.

A few drawbacks to consider include that the Tundra can’t tow as much as rivals. Also, the 2022 Ram 1500 and 2022 Ford F-150 have a more upscale interior.

The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 ranks highly for having an excellent towing capacity, plenty of powerful engines, and intuitive tech features.

Some of the complaints include that the Silverado doesn’t ride as smoothly as competitors, and it has a less upscale interior that doesn’t provide as much comfort as rivals.

The Tundra has an i-FORCE 3.5-liter V6 engine with 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. With the I-FORCE MAX engine, you get 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. The Tundra can tow up to 12,000 lbs.

The Chevy Silverado offers five engines, including two V6 units, one V8 engine, and a diesel option. It cranks out between 277 hp and 420 hp and 305 to 460 lb-ft of torque. It can tow up to 13,300 lbs.

Does the Tundra or Silverado have better features?

The 2021 Chevy Silverado can feel basic with tons of plastics and cheap materials in the cabin. The 2022 Toyota Tundra uses higher quality materials such as wood accents and leather-wrapped surfaces.

An 8.0-inch touchscreen is standard in the Tundra, but you can upgrade to a 14.0-inch unit. The Silverado has a standard 8.0-inch screen. Also, the Tundra offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Both trucks offer a wireless phone charging pad.

With the Tundra, standard safety features include forward collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. These features are optional with the Silverado.

The Tundra starts at $35,950 and seems to be the more comfortable and luxurious option. The Chevy Silverado begins at around $29,300 and serves as a tougher option for work. We wouldn’t say one is better than the other, but they both fit different needs.
