The new 2022 Toyota Tundra Limited is a full-size pickup with luxury. For the redesigned model, Toyota took the truck further than ever before. Recently, a reviewer from Edmunds got the chance to drive one off-road in the snowy mountains of Colorado. This type of test is a bit more interesting for a pickup than those who operate it on the sunny California highway. How did the Tundra fare during these tests? Well, let’s just say the 2022 Toyota Tundra Limited with the TRD Off-Road package is an absolute beast in the snow.

Unfortunately, the V8 engine in many full-size pickup trucks is on the way out. Hybrid drivetrains, electric models, and other fuel-efficient alternatives are much more vital in the eyes of automakers. The 2021 TRD Pro model was the last Tundra to use a 5.7-liter V8 engine. According to Edmunds, however, the Tundra’s new setup ensures you won’t miss that V8 for a second.

Using a turbocharged V6 with 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, the Tundra Limited climbed a snowy mountain incline with a powerful upward jolt. Even with a bed filled with cargo and a full five-passenger cabin, Toyota’s pickup provides plenty of speed for a mountain road. The engine sounds are enhanced in Limited, Platinum, 1794, TRD Pro, and Capstone models with the JBL sound system. The sound system knows when to make the best sounds louder by listening to the engine’s workload. Edmunds says this is a turn-off in other vehicles, but Toyota did an exceptional job making it feel like an authentic V8.

TRD Off-Road Package suspension gets the job done

Mountain trails can be challenging to climb, even for the most well-equipped vehicles. Off-road models often promise excellent handling and performance off-road, but steep inclines and snow can still be troublesome. During Edmunds’ testing, it was surprised by how well the Tundra Limited performed. Snowy mountain inclined roads were no match for the TRD Off-Road suspension. Off-road impacts were far less noticeable using Bilstein monotube shocks with a larger diameter than the standard twin-tube shocks.

“Even during the tightest switchback roads we encountered on our journey, the truck didn’t exhibit excessive body roll. It kept all five occupants comfortable and our gear snug in the bed,” said the Edmunds reviewer.

Even in the worst situations, the 2022 Toyota Tundra‘s handling and off-road comfortability shined through. Thanks to the same off-road equipment, the Tundra’s on-road ride is buttery smooth. Absorbing minor impacts, bumps, and sharp turns like a smaller modern vehicle would.

Is the 2022 Toyota Tundra Limited good in the snow?

In conclusion, the 2022 Toyota Tundra Limited with the TRD Off-Road package is excellent for off-road and on-road driving. It adds suspension improvements that make every Tundra passenger comfortable on any terrain. Even without the massive V8 engine, the Toyota pickup’s performance is surprisingly excellent. Driving up a snowy mountain incline is a breeze, even using the turbocharged V6. Using the JBL sound system in the Limited model, you won’t even miss the roaring sound of the V8. That’s why the 2022 Toyota Tundra Limited is an absolute beast in the snow and on the road.
