Toyota made a splash with the third generation of its Tundra. Toyota’s 2022 Tundra ditches the V8 in favor of a more powerful and more fuel-efficient twin-turbo V6. In addition, the new Tundra borrows a lightweight, fully-boxed frame and rear coil springs from the new Land Cruiser. The result is a very capable–and very expensive–full-size truck. The base model 2022 Toyota Tundra price is thousands more than its competitors from Chevrolet, Ford, or Ram.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra price begins at $37,645

The base model of the 2022 Tundra is the SR. Toyota offers it in extended or crew cabs with three bed sizes: 5.5 feet, 6.5 feet, and 8.1 feet. The new truck leverages advanced alloys, a fully-boxed frame, and a synthetic bed to save weight while adding rigidity.

Instead of developing an electric truck, Toyota’s doubling down on internal combustion. As a result, every 2022 Tundra features the new turbocharged V6 Toyota engine. This powerplant makes 389 horsepower while maintaining a 20 MPG combined fuel-efficiency rating.

The advanced chassis and drivetrain do not come cheap. For example, the entry-level 2022 Toyota Tundra price is over is over $3,000 more than the 2021 Tundra. In 2021, Toyota charged $34,125 for a base-model Tundra. The 2022 Toyota Tundra SR in 2WD begins at $37,645. Four-wheel-drive is a $3,000 option.

By comparison, the base Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTD begins at $30,400. This low price is for a two-door fleet truck.

The 2022 Ford F-150 starts even cheaper: $29,640. Again, this price is for a two-door truck.

Ram only offers its 1500 with a four-door cab. This may be one of the reasons the Base Ram 1500 begins at $34,400.

Even higher Toyota Tundra prices: two top-trim trucks still to come

Toyota will deliver the 2022 Tundra SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, and 1794 to dealerships by the end of 2021. But these will not be the only available trim levels of the 2022 Toyota Tundra.

All 2022 Tundras delivered in 2021 will feature Toyota’s iFORCE twin-turbo V6. But beginning in the spring of 2022, the automaker will also offer the iFORCE MAX hybrid drivetrain. In iFORCE MAX Tundras, an electric motor sandwiched between the V6 and automatic transmission will provide additional power and regenerative braking. The iFORCE MAX powertrain makes 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. It will also increase the Tundra tow rating to 12,000 pounds for two-wheel-drive trucks, around 11,000 pounds for four-wheel-drive trucks.

In Spring 2022, Toyota will begin to offer the iFORCE MAX engine as an option in the Tundra. The automaker will also unveil two top-trim Tundra’s available exclusively with the iFORCE MAX. The first will be the off-road-ready 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro. The newest top-trim truck will be the mysterious, luxurious 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone.
