2022 Toyota Tundra Recall: Trucks With Loose Nuts Could Crash
The 2022 Tundra is a fresh take on the popular pickup truck from Toyota. And though it brings plenty of new features, it already has its share of problems. Despite Toyota’s reputation for making reliable cars, the auto giant recently issued another recall of its brand-new full-size pickup. Here’s a look at the 2022 Toyota Tundra and the truck’s latest recall.
Toyota is recalling 46,000 Tundra trucks from the 2022 model year for loose nuts
The latest recall potentially affects the powertrains on 46,176 2022 Toyota Tundra trucks. The problem involves loose nuts located in the rear axle assembly. These nuts might loosen over time, and if they do, they can fall off the vehicle. If that happens, the subassembly could separate from the axle, the NHTSA reports.
That separation could pose a car safety issue. That’s because a separation could affect the truck’s brakes and stability, potentially leading to an accident. That said, it’s unclear if any of the potentially affected trucks have been involved in crashes due to these loose nuts.
The NHTSA expects Toyota will mail notification letters to owners of the affected trucks on July 15.
When an owner takes their recalled Tundra to an authorized dealership, “dealers will inspect the rear axle assembly, tighten the axle flange nuts, and replace any damaged axle-related components if necessary, free of charge,” the NHTSA says.

This isn’t the 1st recall for the 2022 Toyota Tundra
Despite being brand-new, the 2022 Toyota Tundra already has two recalls. The first was issued in April, but the good news is that it’s a relatively minor problem. Due to some software issues, the Tundra’s backup camera could malfunction in cold weather. This recall shouldn’t affect anyone living in warm areas, but owners still need to take their Tundra to a dealer to get the issue fixed.
These two recalls aside, the Tundra is still a good pickup. The big change that Toyota made to the truck was swapping out its V8 engine options with V6s. The new V6 engines are twin-turbocharged, so they bring a lot of powe. Toyota also offers a hybrid V6. The other significant change involves the truck’s interior.
After 15 years of the Tundra’s second generation, for the 2022 model year, Toyota revamped the interior entirely. It’s more modern, more comfortable, and more feature-laden. In addition to boasting large touchscreens, the new Tundra also has neat features, such as a power sliding rear window.
Other new cars from the automaker are also under recall
The 2022 Toyota Tundra also isn’t the only new vehicle from the brand to see a recall. The bZ4X is Toyota’s first production EV, and it’s supposed to be the carmaker’s electric SUV option for the highly competitive electric SUV segment. Unfortunately, the bZ4X was also recently hit with a recall.
In an issue similar to the Tundra’s, the bolts on the bZ4X’s wheels can come loose. If they become too loose, the whole wheel could fall off. Toyota notified the affected owners on June 23. The good news is that, although 2,700 bZ4X units are under recall, most haven’t been delivered yet. So Toyota can fix any affected bZ4Xs before delivering them to customers. However, owners of affected models shouldn’t drive their bZ4Xs until this issue is resoved.
