A 2022 Toyota Tundra Just Sold For $700,000-What?
Yes, new trucks are selling for a premium these days, but that’s not why this 2022 Toyota Tundra hybrid sold for $700,000. The MSRP for Toyota’s new Tundra Capstone truck starts at $73,530. But the reason for the big price is that this truck was auctioned off for charity, but there’s more. It is the first Tundra Capstone made with the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain.
This 2022 Tundra Capstone was auctioned for the US Paralympic fund
Toyota helps to raise money for the US Paralympic fund, for the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games. This auction is one way it does that, taking place at the Barrett-Jackson auction held in Scottsdale, Arizona. The fund donates $3,000 to each Paralympic Team USA member in training, among other costs.
The Capstone edition is the top-of-the-line Tundra pickup. With the i-Force Max system, it’s powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 combined with an electric motor. This puts out 479 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. Its combined fuel economy rating is 22 mpg, with 24 mpg highway fuel economy, which puts it at the top of this category among all trucks.
The 4WD version’s numbers are reduced at 19 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. With the Pro options, it is rated at 19/21/20.
Both the Toyota Tundra and Ford F-150 hybrids are rated at 24 mpg highway
For comparison, the Ford F-150 PowerBoost hybrid is also getting 24 mpg on the highway, which puts it and the Tundra in diesel engine territory. But diesel engines don’t have the power that the F-150 and Tundra have. However, with diesel fuel generally being cheaper than gas, it comes out more economical.
For a different contrast, the former 5.7-liter V8 2WD Tundra was rated at 13 mpg for the city, 17 mpg highway miles, and 15 mpg combined. With 4WD the numbers were 13/17/14. So the V6 is a vast improvement in the mileage department, with more power and torque. That’s the kind of improvement that makes V8-lovers warm up to V6 power.
A 2022 Tundra TRD Pro was also auctioned
Besides this Capstone Tundra, a 2022 Tundra with the TRD Pro trims was sold at the same auction for $550,000. It is the second hybrid built, with the proceeds also going to the paralympic fund. So combined, the fund donation from this one even raised $1.3 million.
Tundra pricing was just announced. The hybrid option is priced at $3,400 for all trims. A 4×2 Limited CrewMax hybrid pickup with a 5 ½-foot bed starts at $53,995. That is considerably more than the hybrid 2022 Ford F-150 SuperCrew with the base XL trim, which has a price of $42,195.
But adding trims and options can quickly spike F-150 prices. At the other end is an F-150 SuperCrew Limited, with the hybrid V6 and 4WD. It retails for $79,660. That’s around $6,000 more than the Tundra Capstone i-Force Max hybrid powertrain auctioned off this week.
