For 2022, the Toyota Tundra is an all-new truck. The new Tundra’s TRD Off-Road package is one of the best deals around. The package is available on either the 2022 Tundra SR5 or on the 2022 Tundra Limited. Here’s what Toyota includes with the TRD Off-Road package.

The $1,440 Tundra TRD Off-Road package includes skidplates, Bilstein shocks, and all-terrain tires

The TRD Off-Road package is named after the Toyota Racing Development team. It may surprise you to hear that you can order this famed off-road package on a two-wheel-drive (2WD) Tundra.

On the 2WD Tundra SR5, the TRD Off-Road package is comparatively cheap, just $1440. It comes with all-terrain tires on TRD rims. Without the TRD Off-Road package, all-terrain tires (with a rim uprade) will set you back almost $1,400. Another feature included with the package is the skid plate option (which is a $550 option on its own). A third included feature is the off-road-tuned suspension, complete with Bilstein shocks. If you choose to upgrade a 2022 Tundra Limited trim level, the TRD Off-Road package will set you back at least $2,115.

The 4WD Tundra SR5 costs $950 more than the 2WD truck. It comes with a part-time transfer case and a limited-slip differential. For the 4WD truck, the TRD Off-Road package actually costs $2,410. If you opt for the Tundra Limited trim level, 4WD is still just a $950 option, but the TRD Off-Road package costs $3,085.

If you upgrade to the 4WD and TRD Off-Road Package, Toyota adds several more performance features. One upgrade is the electronically locking rear differential. The other major feature is Toyota’s proprietary off-road driver aids: Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), Crawl Control (CRAWL), and Downhill Assist Control (DAC).

Badging, interior upgrades, and rims set the Tundra TRD Off-Road package apart

The TRD Off-Road package upgrades the 2022 Tundra visually, as well. Even the 2WD TRD Off-Road package comes with alloy TRD rims (18-inches on the SR5 and 20-inches on the Limited). Another distinct feature is the truck’s “TRD OFF-ROAD” bedside decal. The upgraded truck even has mudflaps. Finally, the package adds the unique TRD grille.

Inside, the TRD Off-Road equipped trucks look different. Upgrades include a heated leather steering wheel, leather-wrapped shift lever, aluminum sport pedals, and a red TRD engine start button.

When you upgrade to the TRD Off-Road Premium package, Toyota includes additional options. This package costs $3,530 for a 2WD SR5, $4,500 for a 4WD SR5. The premium package adds 8-way power-adjustable heated front seats with 2-way power lumbar. Toyota even trims these seats in SofTex. Another premium interior feature is dual-zone automatic climate control. Finally, the truck has color-keyed outer door handles.

The third-generation Toyota Tundra will be an off-road beast

Toyota fans have been waiting fourteen years for the third-generation Tundra redesign. For 2022, Toyota significantly increased the truck’s off-road capability.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra rides on an all-new chassis. Toyota engineered the chassis in question for the Land Cruiser 300 series: the automaker designed it with next-generation off-road capability in mind. This third-generation of the full-size truck features a fully-boxed frame and composite bed to save weight. In addition, Toyota upgraded the suspension by tossing the truck’s outdated leaf springs in favor of rear coil springs.

The team behind the 2022 Tundra did its best to give the full-size truck Tacoma-like offroad ability. The 2022 Tundra boasts improved visibility thanks to a trail-camera and optional 14-inch infotainment screen. In addition, Toyota took off-road driver-assist software features from the Tacoma and is offering them in the full-size Tundra for the first time.
