You heard it here first. The 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro is going up against the 2022 Ford Raptor pickup truck. Has Toyota finally built a formidable pickup truck opponent to the Ford Raptor?

Sometimes people say that comparing two trucks is like comparing apples to oranges. The situation with the 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro and the 2022 Ford Raptor isn’t one of those situations. Toyota and Ford seemed to have one another in mind when creating the newest version of these two pickup trucks.

The basis of both of these trucks is to have a powerful off-road capable supertruck of sorts. The Ford Raptor has really stepped its game up to make it even more useable and rugged in recent years. The Toyota Tundra TRD Pro probably wouldn’t have come close to the Raptor in previous years. But that has all changed in 2022 with the Tundra’s i-FORCE powertrain addition.

Toyota added Multi-Terrain Select with adjustable settings for controlling wheel spin. “CRAWL Control functions as a low-speed, off-road cruise control that allows the driver to focus on steering while it maintains one of five selectable speeds.” Downhill Assist Control helps control the speed of the truck heading downhill.

New 2.5-inch diameter FOX shocks are included, and add a 1.1-inch lift on the front. Polytetrafluorethylene-infused (PTFE) Fox shock fluid is used to help reduce friction. Plus, it has a new front stabilizing bar, a TRD aluminum front skid plate, underbody protection, and all-terrain Falken tires.

But be honest, the TRD Pro is simply aiming at the Ford F-150 Raptor. Ford equipped the 2022 Raptor with a five-link rear suspension and long-travel suspension. It has FOX Racing Shox with live valve tech, sport-tuned shock absorbers, and an electronic locking rear differential.

The Ford pickup truck has trail control, automatic four-wheel drive, and an integrated trailer brake controller. Ford also added AdvanceTrac with roll stability control (RSC). There are a variety of tow, performance, and tech packages to add even more capability. The 2022 Ford Raptor also gets a 3.5L EcoBoost High-Output V6.

Take your pickup truck pick and get on the road

So yes, it seems the 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro is actually a formidable opponent for the 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor, finally. At the end of the day, though, both performance-based pickup trucks are just fine. One major oversight people have reported is that the Tundra TRD Pro doesn’t have a tow hook on the front. This is an essential feature for those who might actually take the Pro off-road.

If you appreciate the innovation of the Tundra, it won’t disappoint you. Those who are used to the Ford way of life will probably stick with the Raptor. However, how often are drivers of these trucks going to be going full-throttle in the dirt? No matter which full-size pickup truck you end up with, you’ll probably be having too much fun to compare it to another truck. Just don’t plan to get towed out in the Tundra because…Toyota thought it needed to be more aerodynamic.
