Toyota Tundra vs. Ram 1500: performance and efficiency
The 2022 Toyota Tundra is no longer available with a V8 engine. Instead, it comes with a twin-turbo V6 engine in nonhybrid or hybrid form. Consequently, the hybrid version makes 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, while the nonhybrid offers 348 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. Toyota’s full-size truck only comes with a nonhybrid engine in its base form, the SR trim.
Contrarily, the 2022 Ram 1500 comes with one of two engine options. Either a 5.7-liter V8 or a 3.6-liter V6. The first makes 395 horsepower and the latter 305. The V8 and V6 Ram 1500 engines also create 269 and 410 pound-feet of torque, respectively.
Finally, the 2022 Toyota Tundra gets 20 combined miles per gallon. The Ram 1500 gets 26 mpg combined with its V6 2WD setup, 24 mpg with its V6 4WD configuration, 20 mpg with the V8 and 2WD, and drops to 19 combined mpg with the V8 and 4WD. Both pickup trucks are pretty average as far as fuel economy goes but flourish elsewhere.

For 2022, the Toyota Tundra has an available TRD Off-Road Package for the SR5, Limited, and 1794 models. The package includes 18-inch TRD wheels, a TRD grille, TRD off-road suspension, skid plates, mudguards, and a TRD leather shift knob. On 4×4 models, the Tundra gains electronic rear differential locks, multi-terrain select, and crawl control.
As for the 2022 Ram 1500, it has an available BackCountry Edition Package for an off-road look and feel. This package contains an off-road suspension system, all-terrain tires, skid plates, an electronic rear differential, and hill-descent control. It includes a bed extender, spray-in bed liner, and adjustable bed tie-down hooks.
As for towing and payload capacity, the 2022 Toyota Tundra can tow up to 12,000 pounds and haul 1,940 pounds. Its competitor, the Ram 1500, can tow up to 12,750 pounds and carry 2,320 pounds. The Ram pickup truck’s towing capacity is the best in its class, other than the Ford F-150.

As for features and technology, the 2022 Toyota Tundra comes with a standard 8-inch touchscreen, but customers can upgrade it to 14 inches. That’s the largest screen available in any pickup truck in its class. It comes with a volume knob, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capability, and a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot. Each Tundra has driver-assist technology that includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high-beams, and more.
The Ram 1500, on the other hand, comes with an 8.4-inch touchscreen with an available 12-inch upgrade. Car and Driver reported experiencing a lot of glitches and unresponsiveness during their test drive with the pickup truck. In addition, the Ram 1500 comes with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capability, a mobile hotspot, and physical knobs and buttons to alleviate the pain of the touchscreen controls.
