There are a few crossovers to choose from when it comes to electric vehicles for 2022. Some are priced in the luxury electric SUV range, while others, like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, are geared toward performance and are not necessarily a daily driver. The two models we feel you should keep an eye on are the Volkswagen ID.4, as well as the Kia EV6. How do these two EVs compare with each other, and which one is the right choice? First, let’s look at the one problem they have in common.

2022 Volkswagen ID.4 vs. 2022 Kia EV6 electric vehicles

For the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4, you get two drivetrain options. The rear-wheel-drive option has one motor powering the rear axle, producing 201 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque. Its all-wheel drive version has two motors that generate 295 horsepower and 339 lb-ft. As far as the driving range goes, it offers 268 miles for the RWD model, and DC fast charging is standard. On the AWD version, you can go up to 280 miles and achieve a 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of 5.4 seconds. The price for the base model of the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 is reportedly a decent $41,995, according to Car and Driver.

The 2022 Kia EV6 also has RWD and AWD drivetrain options. You can expect just 167 horsepower for the rear-wheel-drive trim, but a bigger battery boosts it to 225 horses. Meanwhile, the AWD version provides between 320 and 576 horsepower depending on your choice of battery pack and has a maximum driving range of 310 miles. The Kia EV6 GT version with 576 horsepower achieves a 0 to 60 mph time of under 3.5 seconds. However, the base powertrain option of the EV6 is much slower than the VW ID.4. According to Car and Driver, the starting price of the 2022 Kia EV6 is estimated at $42,115.

What problem did the VW ID.4 and Kia EV6 have in common?

While both electric crossovers received glowing reviews, they also received criticism regarding their infotainment systems, as neither impressed its critics. With the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4, the display screen operates rather slowly, and it’s challenging to figure out when navigating through menus. 

Meanwhile, on the Kia EV6 infotainment system, you get a decent-sized display screen of 12.3 inches. However, according to Engadget, it was too confusing to figure out. Additionally, the reviewer on the site wasn’t happy that you had to connect the phone to the system with a cable to use the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features, rather than it being wireless. The touch controls for the climate system were a bit of an annoyance as well. The reviewer had to be shown by a Kia PR rep to use that feature. 

Which electric crossover is more promising?

So, when comparing the two EVs, which one is a clear choice? Based on these specs, we’d have to say the Volkswagen ID.4. While it isn’t exactly the most stylish electric crossover, it more than makes up for it with its standard features. Plus, you get a lot for what you end up paying, especially if you go for the all-wheel drivetrain. 

There’s no denying the Kia EV6 has more power but is it worth it when you have to pay quite a bit more to get a decent number of features? With the ID. 4’s Pro trim, you get just about everything you could want for a starting price of $41,955. 

Both EVs are excellent choices. For those who want a great ride at an affordable price, the VW ID.4 has your back. If you’d rather pay more and get more options for a powerful performance, the Kia EV6 will suffice.
