Volkswagen already made a successful foray into the electric vehicle era with the VW ID.4, which earned the 2021 World Car of the Year award. 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 vs. 2022 Toyota bZ4X: What are the differences?

In our comparison between the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 and 2022 Toyota bZ4X, we evaluated several factors. This includes electric motor specs, acceleration, efficiency, electric driving range, and interior features and technologies. 

ID.4 vs. bZ4X: Electric motor specs, acceleration, and efficiency

The Volkswagen ID.4 and Toyota bZ4X offer a choice of either a single-motor or an all-wheel drive dual-motor model. The ID.4 has a rear-wheel drive layout for the single-engine model, while the bZ4X has a front-wheel drive layout. Both crossover EVs produce an output of 201 hp for the single-engine version. However, the ID.4 has a higher output than the bZ4X for the dual-motor model (295 vs. 215 hp).  

For acceleration, the ID.4 has the advantage. The dual-motor AWD ID.4 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds. Toyota lists the acceleration of the dual-motor AWD bZ4X in a 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) measurement, with a time of 7.7 seconds.

The efficiency ratings are not yet available for the bZ4X. It will be interesting to see if it can top the efficiency ratings of the ID.4. The ID.4 has an estimated fuel economy of up to 107 city/91 highway MPGe for the RWD model and up to 102 city/90 highway MPGe for the AWD model.

ID.4 vs. bZ4X: Electric driving range

One of the most important considerations for electric vehicles like the ID.4 and bZ4X is the driving range. You don’t want to always have to worry about having enough battery power to make it to your destination. On this front, the ID.4 has the advantage. The ID.4 has an electric driving range of up to 260 miles for the RWD model and 249 miles for the AWD model.

In comparison, the bZ4X has a range of 230 miles for the FWD model and 200 miles for the AWD model. However, unlike the ID.4, the bZ4X has a solar roof, which provides an average of 1,000 miles range each year. 

ID.4 vs. bZ4X: Interior features and technologies

Both the ID.4 and bZ4X have a futuristic cabin, with a sleek layout and features like a multimedia system, a navigation system, and voice recognition. As of this writing, Toyota hasn’t revealed the full interior feature list. However, we do know that the bZ4X has a yoke-type steering wheel similar to the one in the Tesla Model S. The ID.4 has a more traditional round one.

ID.4 vs. bZ4X: Price

The official price information is not yet available for either the 2022 ID.4 or the 2022 bZ4X. However, the bZ4X will likely cost less than the ID.4, with an expected base-model starting price of $37,000 MSRP. While we don’t yet know the cost information for the 2022 ID.4, the 2021 ID.4 has a starting price of $39,995 for the base-level Pro RWD model.

For our 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 vs. 2022 Toyota bZ4X comparison, the ID.4 has many advantages over the bZ4X, including performance, acceleration, and driving range. However, the bZ4X is likely the more affordable choice. Also, there are many things that Toyota has not yet revealed about the bZ4X, including passenger and cargo space, safety and driving assistance features, warranty coverage, and a full list of interior features and technologies.
