Buyers of the 2023 Tonale have a choice of two powertrain options. The highlight is the plug-in hybrid (PHEV). It combines a 180-horsepower turbocharged 1.3-liter inline-four-cylinder at the front wheels with a 121-hp electric motor at the rear wheels — for a total system output of 273 hp.

With its plug-in hybrid system, which is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, the Tonale PHEV provides an estimated 30 miles of electric-only driving range. Also, the Tonale PHEV has three selectable driving modes: Natural, for normal driving situations, Advanced Efficiency, for optimal fuel economy, and Dynamic, for maximum performance.

The second powertrain that the Tonale offers is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder engine, which is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The output of the turbocharged engine is 256 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Like the Tonale PHEV, the fully-gas-powered Tonale has an all-wheel drive system.
