2023 BMW i4: Here’s How to Choose the Best BMW i4 Trim
Ever since the BMW i-series was introduced in 2011, we have seen some exciting examples of electric vehicles from the German automaker. The BMW i3 turned heads as it brought a uniquely sustainable interior to an emission-free car. The BMW i8 was a sports car that competed with heavy-weight supercars in terms of aesthetic design, but with a fuel-efficient hybrid 3-cylinder engine. While these vehicles were successful, the BMW i4 aims to be a practical and realistic option for consumers looking to get behind the wheel of a BMW EV.
If you are in the market for an EV luxury performance sedan, here is everything you need to know about this BMW performance EV, and what the different trim options mean for you as a consumer.
What is the BMW i4, and what trims are offered?
The BMW i4 is a compact executive EV that was introduced for the 2021 model year. For 2023, the BMW i4 comes in two different trim levels, the i4 eDrive40, and the i4 M50.
The eDrive40 trim has a driveline that makes 335 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque from its all-electric motor. The range of the eDrive40 is listed as being between 282 and 301 miles, according to BMW.
The higher i4 M50 trim, offers much more horsepower than the eDrive40, producing a very impressive 536 horsepower and 586 lb-ft of torque. According to BMW, the M50 has a range capable of 227 to 271 miles. Due to more power, there is an obvious decline in range.
The best BMW i4 trim for you
According to Autotrader, both BMW i4 trims have a lot to offer based on what you are looking to get out of your BMW EV purchase. The lower trim i4, the eDrive40, is much more affordable than the M50. It also offers a better range, yet still delivers on style and character. The higher trim, the i4 M50, offers all-wheel drive. That means better cornering abilities in dry performance scenarios, and of course, better traction in all weather.
The M50 also offers adaptive suspension based on the road conditions, as well as a Sport Boost mode, which gives a bonus of 67 horsepower in short bursts, as long as the battery is charged.
According to Car and Driver, the highest trim, the i4 M50 offers the best value out of the two options. This publication listed the more aggressive appearance, 19-inch wheels, and tuned suspension as the main selling points of the M50 trim. With ambient interior lighting options, as well as a vernasca leather package, the M50 offers much more value over the eDrive trim.
How much does the 2023 BMW i4 cost?
The BMW i4 starts at $55,900 MSRP with the eDrive40 trim. The M50 trim level brings the starting MSRP to $67,300. But that is not the end of the story. Due to these vehicles being EVs, both models are subject to a tax credit of up to $7,500. This makes the BMW i4 an executive luxury electric vehicle starting below $50,000.
If you are looking for full-size EV luxury at nearly half of the price of the comparable Tesla Model S, the BMW i4 might be the perfect vehicle for you. Whether you are in the market for a commuter in the eDrive40 trim, or a true M-powered performance EV, you really can’t go wrong with the BMW i4.
