Just like with most other great cars, the X5 strikes a fine balance that allows it to provide great specs, many features, and a nice driving experience. Edmunds recently reviewed the latest version of the X5, and the car critic had a lot of praise for the luxury SUV. Overall, the X5 was solid in most areas, especially in the areas that luxury car shoppers tend to look at. For example, the site gave the X5 an 8 out of 10 for its performance. The Beemer does especially well in terms of its power output.
There are three powertrains available, and it starts with a 335-hp mild-hybrid V6. BMW also offers a 389-hp PHEV powertrain and a 523-hp V8. All of these options provide more than enough power for the average driver. Similarly, the car critic praised the X5’s interior and comfort levels, and both areas also received an 8 out of 10.
The seats are spacious and comfortable, and the ride quality can be great if owners equip it with the optional air suspension. Leather upholstery is standard, and the front seats are heated as well. However, while Edmunds described the interior as “technologically advanced”, the controls can be hard to learn.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are both standard features, as are a handwriting recognition system and voice controls.
The car critic also gave the luxury SUV an 8 out of 10 for its cargo capacity. It tops out at 72.3 cu-ft., and it can tow up to 7,200 pounds when properly equipped. That said, the Beemer is not a perfect SUV by any means. The standard V6 only gets about 22 mpg, which is ok for an SUV of its size. Edmunds wrote that it has three notable flaws, but they’re all fairly minor.
The mirrors are small, and the roof pillars may create blind spots. The doorsills are wide, and that can make it difficult to get in or out of the SUV. And while it has a decent amount of cargo capacity, its interior storage space is more limited. All said and done though, the X5 is an SUV that consistently did fine in all areas. This meant that it had few serious flaws to speak of, and it didn’t excel in any areas either.

The biggest flaw about the X5 is probably its cost, as it is a BMW after all. It starts at about $62,600, which is fairly expensive for most households. However, it provides a good value for anyone who can afford that price tag. Like Edmunds wrote, “If you’re looking for the ultimate all-rounder, the X5 is the SUV you should be looking at.”
Overall, due to how well-rounded the SUV is, the car critic gave the X5 an overall score of 7.9 out of 10. This score was high enough to make it the fourth-best option in the segment.
