The sDrive40i and xDriver40i trims feature a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, which generates 335 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque. The xDrive45e plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which combines a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine and an electric motor, produces 389 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque.

Both the M50i and M trims are powered by a 4.4-liter V8 engine, which generates 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft torque for the M50i trim and 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft for the M trim. Also, all X5 trims feature an eight-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, except for the rear-wheel drive sDrive40i, the X5 has an all-wheel drive system.

For acceleration, the 0-60 mph time of the X5 ranges from 5.3 seconds for the base trim to as low as 3.8 seconds for the M trim. The X5 M can reach a top speed of 155 mph. Also, the X5 can tow up to 7,200 pounds.

For efficiency, the gas-powered X5 has an estimated gas mileage of up to 23 combined mpg. Also, the X5 PHEV has an estimated fuel economy of up to 50 combined MPGe in electric mode and 20 combined mpg in hybrid mode. For example, the M Sport package no longer includes Vernasca leather, while the  Executive package no longer has Gesture Control.
