One of the great reasons to consider a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD is its engine options. There are two completely different engines available for completely different applications. Every truck buyer has specific needs for their new truck, which can range from towing capacity, payloads, economy, and of course, price. Each of these engines covers at least a couple of those needs, combined with a lot of different trims, bodies, safety and towing features, and bed lengths. Prices start at $40,500.

Silverado L8T 6.6-liter V8

The true heartbeat of Chevrolet trucks has been the V8 engine since 1955. The big-block version of the 1500 5.3-liter V8 is the naturally aspirated 6.6-liter L87. This is the standard engine available in both the 2500 and 3500. It follows those earlier V8s with two valves per cylinder but modernizes that with variable valve timing. Fuel is fed by direct injection.

As you would expect with a big block, the power is big at 401 hp at 5,200 rpm, and 464 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The towing capacity ramps up with 17,400 lbs, with between 3,760 lbs and 3,862 maximum payload. And mileage lowers slightly at 16 mpg City and 20 mpg Highway. All 6.6-liter gas engines get the six-speed automatic transmission with 2WD.

6.6-liter L5P Duramax turbodiesel V8

Diesel engines are slowly being wound down yet are still popular in full-size trucks. For hauling heavy loads on a regular basis, the Duramax turbodiesel is the way to go. It boasts 445 hp at 2,800 rpm and a whopping 910 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm. That combines to haul up to 36,000 lbs maximum trailering weight and around 3,500+ lbs maximum payload. And the Duramax is backed by an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission to help slice through the gears.

Higher boost pressure over the previous version of the Duramax creates even more power. And torque has improved by almost 20 percent. Another improvement is what you’ll feel and hear. This generation of Duramax runs smoother and is quieter than the previous generation with almost a 40 percent reduction in noise during idle. The aluminum heads feature four valves per cylinder and direct injection.

All of these specifications also apply to the 2023 GMC 2500 Sierra full-size pickup as it and the Silverado are essentially the same.

We know that there are big changes coming down the line in 2024. For the upcoming year, these 2500 engines offer a variety of options for every hauling need.
