GM confirmed that it will build hybrid and all-electric versions of the Chevrolet Corvette, the iconic sports car that’s been cherished across multiple generations. Details are sparse about the electrified models, but the hybrid version is rumored to be called the E-Ray. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming Chevy Corvette E-Ray.

Is there a hybrid Chevy Corvette?

Chevy doesn’t offer a hybrid Corvette. Yet. But it’s on its way. GM President, Mark Reuss, announced that the Chevy Corvette hybrid model prototype is in testing and will be fully revealed in 2023. That means we’ll probably see the first electrified Corvette in production as a 2024 model.

Reuss also noted that a fully-electrified version of the American supercar is also coming soon. However, we are unsure when that model will debut and head to production. Regardless, exciting things are happening for this iconic sports car. With both Chevy Corvette hybrid and electric models in the works, the evolution of the Chevrolet Corvette is keeping up with industry trends.

But fans of the old school can rest at ease knowing that, for now, GM plans to release the electrified Corvettes alongside their combustion engine counterparts. The E-Ray hybrid and electric models will be additions to the lineup — not replacements.

How much will the Chevy Corvette E-Ray cost?

GM hasn’t released any pricing information for the Chevy Corvette E-Ray hybrid. However, considering that hybrids like the E-Ray often cost more than their gas-engine counterparts, the E-Ray ‘Vette will probably cost slightly more than the 2023 Corvette Stingray. The starting price of the 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is $65,595 MSRP for the Coupe version and $73,095 MSRP for the Convertible version.

2024 Chevy Corvette E-Ray specs: Hybrid engine

Nothing is official yet for the details and specs of the hybrid powertrain in the Chevy Corvette E-Ray. However, MotorTrend “heard that the E-Ray will adopt a pair of front-mounted electric motors, which will provide low-speed motivation, as well as an extra kick in various performance scenarios.” Behind the cabin, there will be an internal combustion engine. The layout is similar to the recently discontinued BMW i8. Also, with the electric motor and gas engine combination, the Corvette E-Ray will be all-wheel drive.

The Corvette E-Ray hybrid will probably utilize the same 6.2-liter V-8 engine seen in the C8 Corvette Coupe and Convertible. With the added power of the electric motors, the E-Ray will likely have a greater output than the regular C8’s 495-hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Its output will slot it between the regular C8 Stingray and the high-performance Z06. 

Also, with its electric motors, the Corvette E-Ray should get better fuel economy than the Corvette Stingray. The 2023 Corvette Stingray EPA estimates range from 16 mpgs in the city to 24 mpg on the highway. Additionally, “GM could detune the engine” for greater efficiency.

Corvette Zora: Hybrid version of the Corvette Z06

Speaking of the Corvette Z06, there’s a strong possibility that it could have a hybrid version as well. A hybrid version could have the two electric motors paired with “a twin-turbocharged variant of the Z06’s flat-plane crank V-8.” The output of the Corvette Z06 Hybrid will probably be over 900 hp. MotorTrend indicated that it could be called the Corvette Zora. This name comes from GM engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, the “Father of the Corvette.”

New hybrid Corvette E-Ray design: What does it look like?

GM didn’t yet officially confirm the design of the upcoming Corvette E-Ray. However, in its announcement about plans for hybrid and all-electric models, it released a short teaser video of a camouflage-wrapped Corvette doing cold-weather testing. You can hear the roar of an engine in the teaser video. So it’s probably safe to assume the Corvette in the video is an E-Ray Hybrid prototype.
