We’re a little surprised because the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 seems to limit its own capabilities while limiting crucial features to different packages. It’s a little expensive to build a 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 that can go off-roading and tow heavier loads. You may have to compromise by giving up off-roading upgrades or the max trailering package. 

How to get the 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 with 4LO 

According to Pickup Truck Talk, you need to plan your 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 configuration closely. First of all, 4LO doesn’t come standard with four-wheel drive. It’s an optional addition. Only the High Country trim comes with 4Lo and the Max Trailering package. 

But it starts at $65,900, so you have the shell out a lot of cash for this option. Plus, the Maz Trailering configuration can’t be paired with the Silverado Z71 trim. So, the ability to go further in the wild and to tow heavier loads is an impossible combo. 

The 2023 Silverado has two transfer case options. The 2-speed autotrac transfer case has 2WD, 4WD Auto, 4HI, 4LO, and Neural. The 1-speed autotrac transfer features 2WD, 4WD Auto, 4HI, and Terrain Mode. 

According to Chevrolet, Terrain Mode replaces the need for 4LO. It combines 4HI with improved low-speed traction and control for off-roading. But it really only adjusts the transmission shift points and throttle response to prevent wheel spin and maintain traction. 

What comes with the Silverado1500 Max Trailering package? 

The 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 Max Trailering package comes with a 3.42 axle rear axle ratio instead of the standard 3.32 ratio. It’s integrated into the antilock brake system to provide measured brake force signals to electronically controlled trailer brake systems. 

Plus, the trailer gain and output figures can be viewed in the Driver Information Center, and it provides a 220-amp alternator. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is increased by 200 lbs to 7,300 lbs, allowing you to carry more weight. 

With the Silverado Z71, you get an off-road-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels wrapped in all-season tires, skid plates, tow hooks, hill descent control, a heavy-duty air filter, the two-speed transfer case, and a dual-exhaust that’s mounted to the bumper. 

The Max Trailering Package is available with the LT, RST, LTZ, and High Country models. The two-speed transfer case is standard with the Z71, Trail Boss, Custom, Trail Boss LT, ZR2, and High Country options. 

They can’t be bundled together because the Trailering Package and off-road suspension have different goals. One provides enhanced trailering capabilities, while the other adds an extra off-roading gear. 

But rivals such as the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro and Ford Expedition offer 4LO with the max trailering package, so other options can do both. 

How much can the 2023 Silverado tow?

The 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 can tow up to 13,300 lbs and carry a payload of up to 2,300 lbs. It only falls short compared to the 2023 Ford F-150, which can tow up to 14,000 lbs. The Silverado can tow more than the Toyota Tundra and Ram 1500. 

You need the 6.2-liter V8 engine with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque to tow up to 13,300 lbs. The Silverado ZR2 can pull up to 8.900 lbs. We’re having trouble finding the official specs for the Z71 model, but typically off-roading models have a lower towing capacity. 

4LO is typically reserved for inclement weather situations. It can make towing through snow and deep mud a bit easier. Those who need 4LO may get a little frustrated by how limited it is with the Chevy Silverado 1500.
