All 2023 Dodge Durango Engines Including the Hellcat
Dodge just added a new engine for the 2023 Durango. So let’s look at all of the engine options look like for 2023. First, the Hellcat 6.2-liter V8 is back after a one-year absence. That’s 710 hp and 645 lb-ft of torque. While impressive, there are other engine options besides the revived Hellcat.
Is this the end of Durango’s V8?
Dodge is embracing electrification in a big way. So all internal combustion engine options will be the brand’s last at some point soon. But as of now, it’s all you can get in a Durango. And that’s OK. Dodge’s SUV is a medium size performance SUV, one of the few in this category. While the Hellcat reinforces that recognition, the other engine options ain’t too shabby, either.
The base engine for the 2023 Durango is the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. The naturally aspirated engine, pumps out 293 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. This engine has been in production for 10 years, found in various Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram models. With a towing capacity of 6,200 lbs, it has a proven track record with years of trouble-free driving.
What about the all-new Hurricane straight-six engine?
There is a question of when the all-new Hurricane straight-six will replace the V6. An announcement on any changes for the Durango should be coming soon. Could it be a mid-year change? We just don’t know.
Next up is the 5.7-liter Hemi V8, with 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. This has been the Dodge/Chrysler/Ram/Jeep bread-and-butter engine for closing in on almost 20 years. Dodge says the 5.7-liter will see “limited” production in 2023, so if you want this option you better order soon.
Is there a Durango engine between the 5.7 Hemi and Hellcat?
The SRT 392 6.4-liter supercharged Hemi V8 gets slotted between the 5.7 and Hellcat. The 6.4 delivers 8,700 towing capacity and makes 475 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. It was the top engine option in the years that the Hellcat was not available.
With the reintroduction of the 6.2-liter Hellcat, it becomes the top-of-the-line engine option in the Durango. It was dropped for 2022 over emissions issues, but whatever that issue was, it is resolved, according to MotorAuthority.
How many Durango Hellcats will be built this time?
The 2021 Durango Hellcat saw 3,000 built, up from Dodge’s original intent to sell 2,000. As of now, we don’t know how many it intends to produce. And we hear that some 2021 Durango Hellcat owners aren’t happy that their collectible model won’t be as exclusive as they wanted.
Its zero-to-60 mph time is 3.5-seconds, backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. Quarter-mile time is 11.5-seconds, with a top speed of 180 mph. Dodge will begin taking Durango Hellcat orders next month.
Prices haven’t been released for 2023 Durangos, but expect a slight bump from its 2022 price. The 2022 Durango has a base MSRP of $38,855. We expect the base 2023 model will come in close to that price.
