We love when the SUV competition gets spicy, and the new Dodge Hornet could bring more heat to the table. The Mazda CX-5 might need to watch out because the 2023 Dodge Hornet could fly in and strike. 

2023 Dodge Hornet: What we know so far 

There isn’t much information out about the 2023 Dodge Hornet yet, but we do have a few clues to go on. It seems like the new Hornet could have the perfect size and the right amount of power to dethrone the Mazda CX-5. 

The new Dodge Hornet uses the same engines as the Alfa Romeo Tonale. The standard 2.0-liter inline-four engine provides 256 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The plug-in hybrid option pairs a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to crank out 272 hp. 

With the Mazda CX-5, you get a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. You can upgrade to the 2.5-liter turbocharged engine for 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. 

How does the new Hornet perform? 

The 2023 Dodge Hornet rides on the same platform as the Alfa Romeo Tonale. The Tonale is expected to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.0 seconds, and the Hornet could match its speed. 

According to Edmunds, the Mazda CX-5 reached 60 mph in about 8.7 seconds with the standard engine and 6.6 seconds with the turbocharged option. 

When properly equipped, the Tonale can tow up to 3,000 lbs. The Hornet could tow more weight. Also, the CX-5 can tow up to 2,000 lbs. The Mazda CX-5 has standard all-wheel drive, and rumors suggest that the Dodge Hornet could provide standard AWD too. 

The Dodge Hornet PHEV could provide up to 30 miles of electric driving range on a single charge. The Mazda CX-5 gets an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in the city and up to 30 mpg on the highway. 

Like the CX-5, the Hornet is racing-oriented. It could have a fully independent suspension with optional adaptive dampers. 

It’s hard to beat the CX-5’s smooth ride, responsive handling, and confident corning. Plus, the Sport mode and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters make daily driving even more engaging. 

How much does the 2023 Hornet cost? 

The 2023 Dodge Hornet could start around $29,000 while higher trim options climb to about $40,000. The Hornet is the affordable version of the Alfa Romeo Tonale, and it could start at around $38,000. 

You can get started with the 2022 Mazda CX-5 for about $26,250. So, the Hornet could be a little more expensive, but it’s expected to come with more standard power. 

We’re still waiting to learn about the Dodge Hornet’s tech and interior. However, it’s safe to expect near-luxury quality with leather-wrapped surfaces, wood trim, a massive sunroof, and ambient lighting. 

The Hornet will probably offer two different infotainment screen sizes, a head-up display, a new digital gauge cluster, a wireless phone charging pad, and ventilated seats.
