Towing capacity is one of the most important metrics for many pickup truck owners. However, many people shopping for SUVs don’t take it into consideration as often. The Ford Expedition used to be one of the most popular three-row SUVs, but that has since fallen off a little as the Korean and Japanese carmakers have gone in of three-rows. Although models like the Kia Telluride and Toyota Sequoia are quite the competition, the 2023 Ford Expedition has one overlooked strength. No other SUV can out-tow the Expedition. Let’s take a closer look at the best SUVs for towing in 2023.

How much can the 2023 Ford Expedition tow?

iSeeCars listed the top nine SUVs with the highest towing capacity. The 2023 Ford Expedition ranked number one with a max capacity of 9,300 lbs when properly configured. While plenty of other SUVs can tow somewhere in the 8,000-lb range, the Ford is the only one currently cracking 9,000 lbs.

In its simplest, least powerful configuration, the Expedition can tow a minimum of 6,000 lbs. At its strongest, all that power and low-end grunt come from its twin-turbo V6 powerplant. Many other SUVs on this list draw power from a V8, and still the V6 Expedition still out pulls them all.

Are trucks or SUVs better for towing?

While SUVs can do some decent towing, pickup trucks are certainly the leading vehicle type for towing. For instance, the Ford Expedition is the leader of the SUVs with a towing capacity of 9,300 lbs. The regular full-size truck with the highest towing capacity is the Ford F-150, topping out at 13,000 lbs. However, some heavy-duty pickups like the Chevy Silverado 2500 or GMC 3500 can tow up to 20,000 lbs.

However, most people don’t need to haul 20,000 lbs. Hell, most folks don’t need to tow 13,000 lbs. Unless you use a vehicle for heavy labor or you have a large camper trailer, you will likely be fine with most SUV towing capacities.

There is a simple equation to figure out a vehicle’s towing capacity. All you have to do is find the vehicle’s Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating (GCVWR) and subtract the vehicle’s curb weight from that number. You can find your vehicle’s curb weight on the VIN sticker, usually found on the inside of the driver’s door. You may have to look up the GCVWR online. Don’t forget to add fuel weight and any passengers’ weight.
