Ford’s F-150 trucks are still the big leaders in the pickup segment, so why mess with a good thing? At least, that’s what it must be thinking as it continues with its line of six engine options going into 2023. But those Ford engines, on the surface, seem so similar, so let’s look at what makes each one of them different, and which one might be the best choice for you. 

In 2023, Ford offers the F-150 with the following engines, high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, 3.5-liter PowerBoost hybrid V6, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8, 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, 3.0-liter PowerStroke V6 diesel, and 3.3-liter Ti-VCT V6. With six V6 engines, there seems to be a certain amount of redundancy. But looking at each one, you’ll see there are some pretty big differences. 

3.5-liter PowerBoost hybrid V6 engine

For the first time, Ford offered a hybrid engine in the 2022 F-150. The 2023 version features a 430 hp hybrid system for the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6. It is tied to a 35 kW electric motor with a 10-speed automatic transmission. This combo gives 700 miles of range between fill-ups.

It also powers an onboard generator for electric backup on job sites, or to power your house during power outages.  As with all engine options, either rear-wheel- or four-wheel-drive are available. 

3.5-liter Hiigh-Output and standard EcoBoost V6

Ford offers two different versions of its twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6. The standard version comes with 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. The High-Output V6 packs 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. Both offer well-rounded power with fuel efficiency and towing chops. As to reliability, many of these V6 engines see well past 200,000 miles without problems.

3.3-liter Ti-VCT V6

This is the standard engine available for the 2023 F-150. Even though it comes standard, it still offers plenty of power. The “Ti-VCT” designation stands for Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing. That means the camshaft is computer-controlled to vary the valve timing based on the engine’s needs. This increases fuel efficiency and drivability. At 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, it combines plenty of power along with extra grunt. 

2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine

Bumping up from the standard 3.5-liter is the 2.7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6. It increases power to 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. So while it might have smaller cubic inches, it has more power and torque than the 3.5-liter.

5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8

Ford still offers a V8, which can smooth out the powerband offering those traditional V8 characteristics. It also produces more power and torque than the standard V6 offerings (not the twin-turbo options), with 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. 

3.0-liter PowerStroke turbodiesel V6

Diesel fans should know that, at least for 2023, Ford is sticking with a diesel engine option. You can’t beat the performance a diesel offers, but its days are probably limited. That’s because of the EPA and emissions problems that come with diesel engines. Ford’s PowerStroke 3.0-liter V6 develops 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. This gives a towing capacity of 11,500 lbs. 

Actually, there is a seventh power option with Ford’s 2023 F-150 Lightning EV. This will be Ford’s first all-electric truck and portends the future of trucking.
