CNBC reported earlier this week that Ford would increase the 2023 Lightning price by another $5,000 due to supply chain issues and rising costs. The 2023 Lightning Pro now starts at $51,974, which is still up 11% over the last increase. It is also a 30% increase over the original $39,974 price from when it was announced in May 2021.

Ford emailed a statement on the matter, noting that the Lightning price was adjusted “due to ongoing supply chain constraints, rising material costs, and other market factors. We will continue to monitor pricing across the model year.”

There is some good news for those who already have an order placed. Ford says that those with an already placed or scheduled order will not be subject to the price increase. This applies to retail, commercial, and government orders.

The 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning now starts at around $52,000

Back when the Ford F-150 Lightning was first announced, one of the major selling points was the $40,000 price. Not only was it affordable for an electric vehicle, but it was also affordable as a regular truck. However, a lot has changed since Ford first announced the truck. CNBC notes the higher (and still rising) cost of materials like cobalt, nickel, and lithium. Add to that the supply chain issues, pandemic-related problems, and everything else going on.

Previous to this announcement, Ford announced a price increase back in August, noting the rising costs of batteries. That bumped the price up anywhere from $6,000 to $8,500, depending on the model.

The 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning will now starts between $52,000 and $97,000, whereas the 2022 model ran from $40,000 up to $92,000 for the top-of-the-line Lightning. This does not include taxes or delivery fees. Don’t forget that the extended range batter will cost you, too.

You can get the best gasoline-powered F-150 on the market for that much

Depending on how you spec it out, the estimated price for the 2023 Ford F-150 is anywhere from around $30,000 for the base XL trim to $74,000 for the top-of-the-line Limited trim. While the Lightning has a lot to offer buyers and all of the coolest new technology, you can pay for a lot of gas and still have the best gasoline-powered Ford truck out there for less than the Lightning.

Plus, the chance of getting a 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning at MSRP is slim to none. If you do not already have an order, the price is subject to even more change. Those who want to buy a Lightning down the line will also be subject to markups. For now, the ever-increasing price of the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning might price more buyers out.
