You’ve read about all of the innovations and key features of Ford’s 2023 F-150 Lightning EV. But the cabin usually gets a small paragraph. It looks more luxurious than the previous F-150s, and it is improved over the gas-powered version. But let’s dig deeper and see how it compares to rivals Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Yes, we know those two companies won’t have a comparable EV pickup until 2024. But let’s see how much Ford stepped up the Lightning’s interiors.

Is the 2023 Ford Lightning interior the same as the ICE F-150?

First, the interior of the Lightning is very similar to the ICE F-150s. But there are some key differences that should appeal to EV buyers. The biggest difference is the screen, which is almost identical to the Mustang Mach-E’s. Processing times are quick, and though the virtual controls don’t always improve on plain old knobs, these are easy to adjust.

Voice activation for information on demand is standard across all models. Power adjustable pedals are optional, as are metal-look accents. And the navigation information identifies charging stations within a range of your location. Included are both brand and kilowatt-hour ratings. Overall, it is easy to use without the sometimes frustrating search or spool-up time.

With four trim levels, the interior can be upgraded however far your budget allows. The base Pro gives you a clean interior that still relies on grained plastic and vinyl to get the job done. It is definitely a step down from that of a Ram 1500 or Rivian, but still offers a comfortable environment that doesn’t look or feel cheap. Both Black and Estoril Blue are available according to Cars.com.

How do the 2023 Ford Lightning trims compare?

Front seats can be ordered with Max Recline, which can recline the seats 180 degrees to allow for rest while charging. They do a good job of support, offering plenty of width. Rear seat legroom and headroom are generous. Overall, the Lightning offers a better environment than the standard F-150.

The midline XLT incorporates the F-150s retractable shift lever which allows for a sliding tray to come forward. It’s a flat surface for food or a laptop. Three 12-volt DC power outlets, a remote start, an overhead console, and a concealed storage compartment in the cargo area are also standard.

Upgrading to the Lariat trim, while everything for the Pro and XLT trims is standard, there is a gang of options not available with the lower trims. Memory settings, SYNC 4A with enhanced voice recognition, and a 15-inch screen move this trim up the ladder

Which trim is the top-of-the-line?

Going to the top-of-the-line Platinum trim is a big move, with a base price of $96,874, compared to the Lariat’s $74,474. But, of course, it upgrades with front and rear center armrests, real wood accents, an expanse of gauges, and a lot more puts it almost at the level of a loaded Ram 1500. But not quite. And even the Rivian has an edge in the cabin department.

For Ford fans, the differences are slight. And even if you’re not a Ford truck fan, if you’re looking for an EV pickup, right now your choices are the Lightning and Rivian offerings. The Silverado EV and Ram Rev won’t make it to showrooms until 2025. And the Rivian costs much more with fewer local service centers.

So Ford’s Lightning has the competition beat, at least for now.
