Ford might be listening to what people want with the Ford Maverick Hybrid, and that’s all-wheel drive. Plenty of fans have been expressing desires for the 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid to be available with all-wheel drive, and a new triple clutch AWD system could be in the works. 

Is the Ford Maverick Hybrid getting AWD? 

Maybe, we know that there is plenty of interest in the 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid gaining AWD. Ford has acknowledged that the hybrid variant should have the ability to be paired with AWD and the towing package. 

But Ford didn’t want to get too far ahead of itself while launching the new Maverick with a hybrid setup and a more powerful gas-powered engine. It was ready to get Maverick models moving off the line.

Instead of going all the way with AWD capabilities, Ford developed an electric traction motor that’s similar to the one used in the Ford Escape Hybrid. 

There are no packaging or technological impediments that prevent the Escape Hybrid’s AWD system from being paired with the Maverick’s electric motor. 

AWD can be added and hopefully will be soon. But in the meantime, those who want AWD can spring for the more expensive and more powerful model. 

Will the Maverick Hybrid have a new AWD system? 

The 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid could gain a new AWD system. Ford recently patented a new triple AWD system that can alter the amount of torque sent between the right and left wheels. This would make the tiny Maverick incredibly capable. 

But there is a slight catch. Ford hasn’t revealed which vehicles the new AWD system will be made for. The Ford Bronco and Ford F-150 have a body-on-frame system with four-wheel drive. The new setup could be for the AWD options like the Ford Explorer, Escape, and Maverick. 

The new AWD system is also more advanced than traditional all-wheel drive systems. More control is provided for each wheel as the clutches allow power to move through the chassis. 

The first clutch is like a standard clutch and sits between the engine and transmission. The other clutches sit on each axle to move power between the left and right sides. 

You can think of it as torque vectoring with more mechanical connections instead of just braking the inner wheel during turns. Also, power is distributed electronically instead of relying on grip and torque. 

Is the 2023 Maverick better for off-roading? 

The 2023 Ford Maverick isn’t expected to incorporate any significant changes. However, the new AWD system would allow the Maverick Hybrid to traverse inclement weather conditions and tow up to 4,000 lbs. 

For off-roading, you can add the FX4 package. It includes skid plates, 17-inch wheels wrapped in larger all-terrain tires, and hill descent control. You get additional off-roading modes for Mud/Rut and Sand too.

The suspension upgrades include an independent multi-link trailing arm setup with monotube shocks and hydraulic rebound stops. It’s supported by a steel subframe and includes a stabilizer bar and cast knuckles. 

This is a great start for off-roading, but you can’t add this package to the hybrid variant. We know that the Maverick ST racing model is coming out, and perhaps a beefier off-roading trim might also come out.
