Most of what you’ll read about the Ford Maverick compact pickup highlights that it comes standard with a fuel-efficient hybrid system. But did you know there is another engine option? It is the 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder, the Maverick’s second engine choice. So why would you pass on the hybrid for the EcoBoost, or vice-versa? 

How much power does the Maverick hybrid have?

The Maverick comes with a gang of options. But even in base trim, it offers what seems like a premium interior, with plenty of places Ford has snuck storage into. With either engine, there is plenty of power, cargo capacity, and high towing numbers. 

Its base 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid comes with 191 hp, combined with the electric motor. That’s plenty of scoot for a 3,600 lb compact. But Ford offers more with the optional 2.0-liter EcoBoost.

Are there other differences that come with one Maverick engine over the other?

It marches past the hybrid’s numbers with 250 hp. But that is only part of the story. With the hybrid, you get a continuously variable automatic transmission. But there are plenty of consumers that prefer a traditional automatic. That’s what comes with the EcoBoost engine option, an eight-speed automatic. 

That’s not the only difference. Ford only sells front-wheel drive with the hybrid. But ordering the Ecoboost four-cylinder, you can add all-wheel drive. So the differences between the two engines aren’t just the numbers. It affects transmission choice and drivetrain.

What about Maverick’s fuel economy?

A buyer preference for one or the other Maverick engine might center around fuel economy. This is where the hybrid system shines, as you would expect. It offers 42 mpg City and 33 mpg Highway numbers. For the 2.0 EcoBoost, City mileage is 23 mpg, and 30 mpg Highway, with two-wheel drive. With all-wheel drive, those numbers drop by one mpg. 

So with the differences between the two Maverick engines for power, options, and fuel economy, let’s look at prices. The Maverick’s base price, starting with the two-wheel drive hybrid 2.5-liter engine, is $22,490. Going with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, prices start at $23,690 for the two-wheel drive system. Adding all-wheel drive, ups that number by $2,220. 

What about Maverick trims?

When it comes to choices and preferences, it’s a game of give and take. That is definitely the case for the 2023 Ford Maverick. You’ll have to weigh all of the key differences mentioned above to hammer down the truck you want for the price you want to pay.
