2023 Ford Mustang Sales Have Tripled Mustang Mach-E Success
The Ford Mustang Mach-E has been one of the most unique EVs to hit the automotive market in the past few years. Many electric vehicles produced today are either electrified versions of gasoline-powered vehicles or brand-new models built from the ground up with an electric powertrain in mind.
However, the Mustang Mach-E takes a different approach by offering traditional Mustang design cues in a mass-market crossover SUV body style. The Mach-E name itself is another callback to the Mustang Mach 1 models of the past, with an electrified spin. The Mustang Mach-E’s goal was to appeal to as many people as possible and to give Tesla a run for its money in the performance EV segment while introducing the next generation of tech-forward drivers to the Mustang in a bold new way. So far, results have been mixed, and for 2023, the traditional Mustang is lapping the Mustang Mach-E in sales.
Mustang vs. Mustang Mach-E for 2023
According to GoodCarBadCar, the traditional gas-powered Ford Mustang nearly tripled the sales numbers of the Ford Mustang Mach-E. In 2023 so far, the Mustang has sold around 21,965 units, which is a 29.49% increase in sales compared to this time last year. The Mustang Mach-E, on the other hand, has only sold 9,930 units so far this year, a 36.82% decrease in sales compared to this time last year.
Of course, due to infrastructure restrictions and just how large and diverse the needs of American drivers are, EVs are not well received by everyone. Due to this lack of nationwide support compared to traditional gas stations, EVs are expected to sell less than conventional gas-powered vehicles. However, seeing a traditional vehicle’s sales nearly triple that of a new cutting-edge EV is shocking, especially when they share the same consumer base, at least on paper.
Why is the traditional Mustang running away in sales?
The Ford Mustang has always been a hot seller, but this year is especially impressive for the Mustang, thanks in part to the newly redesigned model just released for the 2024 model year. This new generation of Mustang has received a ton of sweeping praise for updating the aging body style found on the 2023 Mustang.
Meanwhile, the Ford Mustang Mach-E has lost a decent amount of sales due to a lack of production. In January 2023, the Mustang Mach-E model’s production facility in Mexico was shut down to aid in an expansion project, according to Ford Authority. This production pause, mixed with a Mustang Mach-E price drop on the horizon, has been huge in explaining the decline in sales of the Ford EV over the past few months.
Will the Ford Mustang Mach-E bounce back?
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is one of the better EVs on the market today. Despite a controversial name, this performance EV sells well in American states with solid eclectic vehicle infrastructure. For now, the Mustang Mach-E is expected to bounce back in sales after this recent slump due to an expected price cut for U.S. buyers.
Meanwhile, the traditional Mustang continues to sell well and will likely sell well into its next generation. With a whole new body style, it seems like the Mach-E and the traditional gas-powered Mustang will be battling head-to-head in sales for years to come.
