The all-new 2023 Genesis G90 is taking the luxury sedan segment by storm. Bulldozing an affordable path past Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz to the top of the class, the newcomer impresses. It has all the sumptuous trappings one would expect in a business-class luxury car. But the G90 may have one thing up its sleeve that the competition isn’t known for—reliability.

Are Genesis cars reliable?

Genesis hasn’t been on the block for too long. And the Hyundai Motor Company marque released its first standalone model—the G90—less than a decade ago. Throughout its first generation, the G90 distinguished itself in the large luxury car segment by offering class-standard amenities for a far lower starting MSRP. For the 2021 model year, J.D. Power gave the Genesis G90 a quality and reliability score of 91 out of 100. The figure was eight points higher than the much more expensive BMW 7-Series. The following year, the G90 remained rated at 91 in the category. Again, higher than the 7-Series, but also far better off than models from Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.

How does the 2023 Genesis G90 reliability rank now?

Genesis doesn’t just rival the luxury segment in reliability; it tops all mass-market brands. In the J.D. Power 2023 Vehicle Dependability Study, Lexus was rated the most reliable luxury brand with 133 problems per 100 (PP100) vehicles. Genesis was a close second with 144 PP100, ranking above the leader of the mass-market pack, brand-adjacent Kia.

Official reliability rankings aren’t in yet for the first year of the second-generation G90. Some may say that the first model of a redesign year can carry more issues than the preceding or succeeding model years. There is wide-ranging evidence across all segments that shows this pattern. Nevertheless, Genesis’ dedication more toward building a brilliant luxury sedan and less toward competing directly against the competition may pay off.

For instance, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S500, like all S-Class sedans, has the latest and greatest tech features. State-of-the-art driver assistance technology is a welcome addition; however, it doesn’t necessarily bode well for reliability. Potential buyers are looking at a starting MSRP of $88,400. For $10,300 more, Genesis will put an electric supercharger on the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6. That punches the ponies from 375 to 409 and includes a host of other decadent interior touches. But how much will all this opulence and pizzazz cost to maintain and repair?

Repair frequency is typically higher with luxury cars than mass-market vehicles—going back to complexity. It’s a bit early to determine the average repair cost on the 2023 G90, but lessons from history can help. Basing analysis on the 2020 model year G90, Edmunds says potential owners should expect an average of $2,688 in repairs over the first five years. That’s judging a used car, not a new one that hasn’t been owned and driven.

Let’s not forget that Genesis offers the best warranty in the business. A 10-year, 100,000-mile limited powertrain guarantee will ensure almost anything that pops up is attended to by dealerships. If recalls are a worry, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration only issued one recall in the past four model years. It pertains to potentially exploding seat belt pre-tensioner affecting the 2022 and 2023 Genesis G90.

The resale value of Genesis cars is also increasing, speaking to the fact that the G90 may fare better in longevity than ever before. And it doesn’t have the woeful depreciation of comparable Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz sedans. It may not be a technical dependability measurement, but it is a direct result that Genesis intends to rival the best in build quality and reliability.
