Most new trucks only get better, but the GMC Cayon is marching to the tune of its own beep. Instead of managing to get a better fuel economy, it got a bit thirstier. However, the stout extra power could be worth it. Check out how much gas the 2023 GMC Canyon guzzles.
What is the 2023 GMC Canyon mpg?
The standard 2023 GMC Canyon gets an EPA-estimated 17 mpg in the city and up to 19 mpg on the highway. That’s for the Canyon Elevation trim, and adding four-wheel drive could reduce these figures a little.
The slightly beefier Canyon AT4 gets an EPA-estimated 17 mpg in the city and up to 20 mpg on the highway. The official numbers for the Canyon AT4X haven’t been revealed. Each model, aside from the Elevation trim, has standard 4×4.
But it has a wider track, more ground clearance, larger tires, and heavier off-roading equipment, so it could be even more of a gas guzzler.
Pickup Truck Talk shared that the 2022 Canyon with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and up to 25 mpg on the highway. It cranks out 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque.
With the outgoing model, the available 3.6-liter V6 engine with 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque gets an EPA-estimated 18 mpg in the city and up to 25 mpg on the highway. Adding 4×4 to both engines reduces the mpg in the city to 24 mpg.
Also, the 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and up to 30 mpg on the highway. Adding 4×4 decreases these figures to 19 and 28. This engine provides 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The diesel engine was discontinued by the way.
Does the 2023 Canyon have more power?
Yes, the 2023 GMC Canyon has more power at the cost of its fuel economy. The new turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine with 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. The older gas-powered and diesel-powered engines were dropped.
This engine offers three different outputs with different power levels. However, the Canyon is only available with the high-output model. You can check out its cousin, the Chevy Colorado if you want to save with less muscle.
The extra boost gives the Canyon a little more towing power. The 2022 Canyon can to up to 7,600 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,584 lbs. But the 2023 Canyon can tow up to 7,700 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,670 lbs.
Also, the 2022 Canyon can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.5 seconds, and the 2023 Canyon can reach 60 mph in about 6.4 seconds. So perhaps the extra power is a fair trade-off for a reduced fuel economy.
Is the new Canyon more reliable?
The 2023 GMC Canyon hasn’t improved its predicted reliability rating yet. It earned a J.D.Power score of 80 to 100, just like the 2022 Colorado. But with time, as the Canyon is put through the paces, it could receive a higher score. New scores typically come out in September.
On that note, scores between 70 and 80 are average, scores between 81 and 90 are great, and anything between 91 and 100 is best. The average Canyon model is expected to last over 200,000 miles.
But with the proper care and regular maintenance, the Canyon can make it past 300,000 miles. If you drive about 15,000 miles per year, the Canyon can provide 13 to 20 years of service on the road.
