The 2023 Honda Civic Type R is a redesigned hot hatch inside and out. Some fans love the Type R’s explicitly overdesigned predecessor more than the subtly redesigned newcomer, but times change, and so too did the Civic. However, Honda didn’t just refresh the exterior styling. Instead, Honda says the new interior offers an “immersive cockpit experience.”

What’s different about the new 2023 Honda Civic Type R’s interior?

The new Type R takes the Civic’s sharp redesign to another level. First, Honda outfitted the hot hatch with seats meant to grip drivers in high-G cornering. In addition to function, the new seats feature a handsome red suede-like upholstery. Next, Honda ditched the old-school gauge cluster for a simplified digital display with a graphic rev counter and rev indicator lighting. The lights will reportedly help drivers get the most out of their track-ready hatchback. 

In addition to the Civic Type R’s new +R driving mode display, Honda gave the hot hatch a LogR™ data system. The data logger allows drivers to view information about every corner of the car in real-time, as well as track their driving performance. Additionally, the LogR™ lets drivers share their driving videos, fostering a sense of performance community. Finally, Honda wrapped up the package in understated modernity, a welcome move. 

What was wrong with the last Type R?

In addition to updating the unfortunate exterior styling of the previous Civic Type R, Honda simplified and modernized the cockpit of the upcoming car. The new 2023 model has a front-and-center approach infotainment system in lieu of the lackluster unit from the 2021 model. The previous model wasn’t all terrible, though; just absorb the aluminum shift knob, and you’ll see. However, the new car retains some of the sportier elements of the 2021 Honda Civic Type R. 

Will the 2023 Honda Civic Type R come in automatic? 

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R pairs its turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission. If the new Type R is unlike the previous models, it won’t offer an automatic. Still, double-clutch automatics are increasing in popularity for performance cars, and we might see one in the Type R of the future.

How much will the 2023 Type R cost?

If you want a 2023 Honda Civic Type R, you’ll have to be ready to part with nearly $40,000. Car and Driver says the Type R will likely demand $39,000, making it cheaper than a comparable Volkswagen Golf R. That, along with the promises that the upcoming Type R will be the most powerful iteration yet, means the hot hatch will be a serious performer in the segment.
