The 2023 Hyundai Kona is value-packed
South Korean automaker Hyundai’s Kona subcompact SUV nameplate is synonymous with fun. The Kona’s unique quirky design and peppy powertrain options have made it a hit among consumers. The Kona burst onto the scene in 2017, and the last few model years have climbed subcompact SUV rankings.
The Hyundai Kona starts at $21,990. It comes in four different trim levels. The Limited final trim level starts at $28,800.
The SEL starts at $23,800. The Kona SEL offers the option to add Hyundai’s Convenience Package. The SEL with Convenience Package includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, wireless device charging, and heated front seats. It also comes with a power sunroof, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a Hyundai digital key.
The package adds $2,400 to the SEL’s starting price, bringing its total price closer to $26,200. The SEL with Convenience Package may seem pricey compared to other Kona configurations, but it comes with plenty of creature comforts that are worth the money. Features like the larger infotainment system, digital key, and heated front seats make the Kona SEL with Convenience Package better suited for long-term ownership than other Kona configurations.
Is the Hyundai Kona reliable?
Recent Hyundai Kona model years got very mixed Consumer Reports reliability scores. CarComplaints.com has very few complaints registered against Kona models. It lists the 2018 Hyundai Kona as the most problematic model year.
The publication calls the 2018 model’s faulty blind-spot collision warning feature its worst issue. The 2021 model year only got two problems registered on CarComplaints. The Hyundai Kona isn’t particularly unreliable, but it isn’t the most reliable model in its segment either. Ultimately, the Kona doesn’t have any major mechanical issues that should concern buyers.
What’s the deal with the Hyundai Kona Electric?
Hyundai chose to electrify the Kona nameplate. The Kona Electric is much more expensive than the gas-powered version, but it’s an important part of the South Korean automaker’s lineup. Major automakers are trying to electrify their lineups, and the Kona Electric is a perfect entry point for Hyundai.
The automaker used the Kona silhouette to create an EV that’s meant to be as fun as its gas-powered ancestor. The 2023 Hyundai Kona Electric uses an electric motor to make 201 horsepower. That’s 54 more horses than the base model Kona. The Kona Electric is even more powerful than the Kona’s turbo powertrain option.
The Hyundai Kona Electric has a whopping 258 miles of driving range, so it’s more practical than many of its rivals. It starts at $33,550.
