Debuting for the 2020 model year, the Hyundai Palisade is a popular three-row midsize SUV with seating for up to eight people. It and its corporate cousin, the hot-selling Kia Telluride, compete against the Subaru Ascent, Mazda CX-9, Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, and Chevrolet Traverse. The Palisade has sold well, and Hyundai refreshed it for 2023. Among the changes are enhanced 2023 Hyundai Palisade safety features and advanced driver-assistance systems.

Overview of the 2023 Hyundai Palisade

The Hyundai Palisade boasts numerous updates for 2023, with changes to the exterior and interior styling. It packs a 291-hp 3.8-liter V6 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. As for gas mileage, the front-wheel-drive Palisade gets 19 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg combined. The all-wheel-drive option gets slightly lower fuel economy numbers: 19 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg combined.

The 2023 Hyundai Palisade offers five trim levels. Starting at $34,950 is the base-model SE. One trim level up, the SEL starts at $37,950. Then there’s the brand-new XRT trim, adding off-road styling starting at $40,250. The Limited is a premium trim that starts at $46,500. And last, the range-topping Calligraphy boasts opulence starting at $48,900.

2023 Hyundai Palisade safety features and advanced driver-assistance systems by trim level

The 2023 Hyundai Palisade provides a suite of car safety features and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) — some standard and others available on higher trim levels.

• SE: The base model comes standard with blind-spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic warning, forward collision warning, lane following assist and lane-keeping assist, driver attention warning, safe exit assist (which warns of cars approaching from behind a parked vehicle), parking distance warning (reverse), rear occupant alert, Highway Driving Assist I (to keep the Palisade centered at a safe speed and a safe distance from the vehicle ahead), high-beam assist, and navigation-based cruise control with stop-and-go and curve control.
• SEL: In addition to providing the above standard features, the SEL trim offers available forward collision-avoidance assist, parking distance warning (forward), Highway Driving Assist II (which includes lane changing assist), a surround-view monitor, and blind-spot view monitor as part of the Premium Package — not available in the higher XRT trim.
• XRT: The XRT provides the same standard safety features as the SE; however, its rear occupant alert includes an ultrasonic sensor, Hyundai notes.
• Limited: This trim adds the safety features in the SEL Premium Package.
• Calligraphy: The Calligraphy trim adds parking collision avoidance (reverse) and remote smart parking assist to the 2023 Palisade’s long list of standard ADAS and safety features.

Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and vehicle exit warning are all new for 2023, according to Consumer Reports. Other new 2023 Hyundai Palisade ADAS features are Highway Driving Assist (with cruise control and speed limit sign recognition), navigation-based cruise control with stop-and-go and curve control, and highway lane-change assist. In addition, Hyundai improved the forward collision warning and automatic braking systems.

What are ADAS features?

“Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are electronic systems in a vehicle that use advanced technologies to assist the driver,” the automotive technology company Aptiv explains. The systems use data from sensors, such as radar or cameras, to figure out what’s happening around the vehicle. The system either gives the information to the driver or engages it automatically.

These systems can provide warnings to drivers, act as active safety features, or handle the vehicle’s propulsion. The driver receives information as a visual, audio, and/or sensory warning (such as a gentle vibration in the steering wheel), as with blind-spot warnings, reverse alerts, or lane-departure warnings. True active safety systems allow the vehicle to control braking or steering. And they tend to have the word “assistance” in their names. ADAS can reduce crashes, and active safety systems can decrease them further than by using only warnings. Level 2+ active safety systems handle propulsion and steering, as with adaptive cruise control.
