The Mazda CX-50 was introduced for the 2022 model year. It competes with other compact SUVs like the Nissan Rogue and Toyota RAV4. For 2023, Mazda has introduced a new trim level for this vehicle, known as the Meridian Edition. Additionally, the other trim levels are still available. Allowing buyers to find the right amount of SUV for their specific needs. So, what exactly are the various trim levels and packages offered to the 2023 Mazda CX-50 SUV?
What are the trim levels of the 2023 Mazda CX-50?
The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is available in 10 trim levels with a starting MSRP of $27,550. The base trim is the CX-50 2.5 S. And as the base version of this SUV, it does feel fairly stripped down, especially when compared to the higher trims.
In terms of what’s under the hood, unless you opt for the turbocharged engine, you will get 187 horsepower and 186 pound-foot of torque. Each 2023 CX-50 does come with all-wheel drive. Which is a nice feature to have, especially if you live in a place with winter weather.
If you want more power, you can opt for the Mazda CX-50 2.5 Turbo. With the 2.5-liter turbo engine, you can benefit from 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Plus, the Turbo model comes standard with things like a 10.3-inch infotainment screen, heated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof. All things that will elevate the driving experience.
What is the CX-50 Meridian Edition?
Recently, Mazda announced the arrival of the Meridian Edition for the CX-50. This trim comes with the turbocharged engine, a number of visual changes, and all-terrain tires. It also has an MSRP of $39,950. Essentially, the 2023 CX-50 Meridian Edition is supposed to evoke ruggedness.
Where this model might fall short is that there are not actually any mechanical changes. According to Car and Driver, the AWD system has not been modified and there are not things like off-road shocks. It would have been nice if Mazda went all the way to make an off-road SUV. But, unfortunately, that is just not the case here.
Should you buy the 2023 CX-50?
The Mazda CX-50 rides on the same platform as the CX-30 and Mazda3, giving it a fairly athletic feel. And, this SUV looks more rugged than the CX-5. Mazda is becoming known for having upscale design, so the CX-50 is a slight departure from that, but it is worthy of consideration if you want a two-row SUV.
Plus, this vehicle starts at under $30,000, but it is likely that most shoppers will look to one of the higher trims to get more features. The CX-50 competes with the Hyundai Tuscon and other compact crossovers. Thanks to things like standard AWD, it does compete fairly well.
In the future, Mazda does have plans to offer a hybrid version of this SUV. And reportedly, that will borrow a powertrain from Toyota, which should make it a competent vehicle. But, we will see when that arrives.
