How much do we expect the 2023 Mazda CX-90 cost?

Mazda didn’t yet release the price or trims information for the 2023 CX-90. However, Car and Driver estimates that the 2023 CX-90 will have a starting cost of around $40,000. The automotive site also gives an estimated price breakdown of the Mazda CX-90, following the traditional trim lineup of Mazda’s other models:

  • Base: $40,000
  • Select: $42,000
  • Preferred: $44,000
  • Preferred Plus: $46,000
  • Premium: $48,000
  • Premium Plus: $52,000

2023 CX-90 specs: Hybrid engine options

The 2023 CX-90 will be the first Mazda model to use the automaker’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine. The new turbo engine is expected to be “augmented by a 48-volt hybrid system.” With the hybrid system, Mazda appears to be following the playbook of luxury SUVs such as the Land Rover Range Rover Sport and the BMW X5, which have similar systems. This demonstrates a move toward the luxury SUV segment with the CX-90.

Horsepower and torque specs are not yet available for the turbo 3.0L engine in CX-90. However, these figures will undoubtedly surpass the 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque for the 2.5-liter turbo-four engine in the CX-9.

Another likely possibility for the CX-90 is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model, which might use the same system as the European-market CX-60 crossover SUV. It features an “inline four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a 17.8-kWh battery pack,” which generates a total system output of 323 horsepower. Also, like the rest of the Mazda SUV lineup, the CX-90 will probably have standard all-wheel drive.

Will the Mazda CX-90 replace the CX-9?

It’s unknown if the Mazda CX-90 will replace the CX-9 or be sold alongside it. Mazda faces the same question with the CX-50 and CX-5 compact crossover SUVs. Previously, Mazda replaced the CX-3 with the CX-30 subcompact crossover SUV. If we had to place a bet, we’d wager that Mazda will sell both the CX-90 and CX-9 for a few years before the CX-90 eventually replaces the CX-9.
