Mini recently introduced its 2023 lineup. Models include the subcompact Mini Cooper — in two-door and four-door and hardtop and convertible configurations — and the brand’s only crossover SUV, the 2023 Mini Cooper Countryman. Last year’s models offered Apple CarPlay as an available option. So, does the 2023 Mini Cooper Countryman have Apple CarPlay as a standard feature? What about wireless CarPlay?

Overview of the 2023 Mini Cooper Countryman

The 2023 Mini Cooper Countryman looks similar to its subcompact sibling but a bit wider, taller, and longer. Despite being Mini’s largest vehicle, the Countryman comes with the same base engine as the smaller two- or four-door Cooper. Its twin-turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine produces 134 hp. All Cooper models also offer an available 2.0-liter turbocharged engine making 189 hp and 206 lb-ft of torque.

In addition, the 2023 Countryman provides other engine options. They include a 2.0-liter turbo-four harnessing 301 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque and a 1.5-liter three-cylinder plug-in hybrid with an electric motor producing 221 hp.

Depending on whether you choose front-wheel or all-wheel drive, the transmission could be a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic or an eight-speed automatic, according to Car and Driver. That applies to the gas models; the PHEV gets a six-speed automatic.

Notably, the 2023 Mini Countryman looks tiny compared with other new crossover SUVs. But there’s no denying its practicality over other models in the Mini lineup. This is especially true for the rear seat, although some taller individuals might find the headroom lacking. Nevertheless, legroom should be decent considering it hasn’t changed since the 2022 model.

For its small size, the 2023 Mini Cooper Countryman is relatively expensive, starting at $34,950, according to Mini.

Apple CarPlay was available in last year’s model as part of a technology package for an upcharge. But the 2023 Mini Cooper Countryman comes with Apple CarPlay integration as standard equipment. However, the Countryman’s MSRP is also higher this year.

With Apple CarPlay, you can access your iPhone’s apps through the Countryman’s infotainment screen, making it easier and safer to use your phone while on the road.

Initially, Apple intended CarPlay to provide only seamless smartphone and vehicle integration. However, the company is also looking to improve in-car connectivity through significant software changes later this year. They include controls for cars’ climate systems, seat temperature, weather display, navigation, gauge cluster information, and more.

Although the 2023 Mini Countryman has Apple CarPlay, it doesn’t yet offer wireless CarPlay. And it still doesn’t have Android Auto connectivity.

What else can you expect in the 2023 model?

The 2023 Mini Countryman also provides innovative tech features such as Journey Mate, Mini’s proprietary trip planner app. That’s in addition to a handwriting recognition-capable touch controller and a retractable head-up display. There’s also a parking assistant that helps determine whether the vehicle can fit in a parking spot.

Furthermore, Mini has added the Untamed Edition package for 2023. However, it’s available only for the Cooper S and SE trims. The package includes exclusive exterior paint, two-tone 18-inch wheels, blue and green interior fittings, “Untamed” branding, and more.
