Is the 2023 Nissan Frontier Still a Good Truck?
When the 2022 Nissan Frontier came out, it marked the first big update for the brand’s midsize truck in years. For a time, it seemed like the new Frontier had a leg up on the competition. But now, other manufacturers, from Ford to Toyota, are dropping new midsize pickups. Can the 2023 Nissan Frontier still compete?
What years are 3rd gen Frontier?
The third-generation Nissan Frontier truck started production in 2021 for the 2022 model year. It marks the end of the second-gen Frontier, which was around for nearly 20 years. This midsize truck is body-on-frame, has a 3.8-liter V6 engine with 310 horsepower, and retains off-road credibility with its PRO-4X trim.
It might be that naturally-aspirated V6 engine that gives the 2023 Frontier the edge over some rivals. In a move that might upset some loyalists, it looks like the 2024 Toyota Tacoma is going to drop that option. And that means the Jeep Gladiator and Honda Ridgeline will be the only other midsize new midsize trucks you can get with a standard V6.
The other thing the 2023 Nissan Frontier has going for it is its configurability. Some other truck models are cutting down on the configurations offered. With the Frontier, there are multiple cab and bed options, including a long bed if you find yourself hauling lengthy items often.
Nissan’s midsize truck feels old-school
Despite being redesigned for the 2022 model year, the Frontier still has old-school charm. That might not make this pickup right for everyone, but it is something that I personally appreciate. Driving it feels like driving a truck, and after all, isn’t that what these vehicles are all about?
At the same time, the Frontier does not feel as refined as some of the competition. It also is not the most capable truck in its class. As it stands, the other truck that feels old-school in 2023 is the Toyota Tacoma. But Toyota is about to redesign the Tacoma, and that will probably make it feel much more modern.
And although Nissan’s midsize truck lacks a telescopic steering wheel, it also doesn’t have a manual transmission anymore. So you are restricted to an autobox.
What is the best midsize truck of 2023?
According to Kelley Blue Book, the 2023 Toyota Tacoma is the best midsize truck for 2023. I’ve had seat time in the 2023 Tacoma TRD Pro, and I can tell why people seem to love this pickup. It is certainly starting to show its age, but it ranks high for reliability and resale value.
In the same ranking, KBB actually puts the 2023 Nissan Frontier in sixth place, and I’m not sure if that’s fair. The Frontier has a more powerful and standard V6 engine and feels newer than the current-gen Tacoma.
The Frontier also boasts some standard safety tech, which is something that you should expect in 2023.
