In terms of being a mid-size truck, there is a lot to like about the 2023 Nissan Frontier. It comes standard with a V6 engine, offers four-wheel drive, and it is one of the newer pickups on the market. Better yet, the Frontier still offers its off-road trim known as the PRO-4X. And apparently, it doesn’t require you to make too many sacrifices while driving on the pavement. 

What is the Nissan Frontier PRO-4X?

The 2023 Frontier PRO-4X is the off-road version of Nissan’s mid-size truck. It comes with the type of equipment you would expect from a rugged truck, including Bilstein shocks, 4WD, and skid plates to keep the undercarriage protected. The Frontier PRO-4X also boasts more aggressive looks.

If you need another indication that this is an off-road truck, it comes with an electronic locking rear differential. That feature is necessary for low traction situations and when 4WD just is not enough.  Other notable characteristics are all-terrain tires and off-road gauges. Both should help if you intend to put your mid-size trucks in 4×4 areas. 

The 2023 Frontier PRO-4X is the top-trim Frontier

The 2023 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X is certainly more expensive than the base model. But it’s not as expensive as something like the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro. Because of that, it might be easier to fit it within your budget. Plus, the Frontier is more powerful than the Tacoma. However, it is worth noting that you can no longer get Nissan’s mid-size truck with a manual transmission. 

One characteristic that sets this off-road truck apart from its rivals is the seating situation. Nissan has equipped the 2023 Frontier with NASA-designed zero-gravity leather seats. According to Car and Driver, they are extremely comfortable. And that should help with the daily usability of this pickup truck. 

Can you buy a Nissan Frontier PRO-4X? 

Unlike something like the Ford Maverick, if you want a Frontier PRO-4X, you should be able to find one at a dealership. And for folks who are looking for a new off-road truck, that is likely a good thing. Supply chain issues are still having a heavy impact on the automotive industry, so it’s nice to see that Nissan is still able to get its products to consumers. 

The PRO-4X nameplate was first introduced on the Frontier back in 2009. So, if purchasing a new truck isn’t in the cards, it might be worth looking at a used option. According to Vehicle History, there are some years of the Frontier you will want to avoid. But outside of those, you can likely find a good pickup truck. 

But, when it comes to daily driving, a 2023 Nissan Frontier will likely be more comfortable than the previous generation. And considering that this truck will likely be on the pavement for the majority of its life, that is a good thing. 

When you do decide to take this off-road truck on the trails, you will likely appreciate the capability that Nissan has given it. Even if you can no longer row your own gears.
