The Nissan Titan was in the same boat as the Toyota Tundra until the Tundra got a bold new redesign. Now it’s painfully apparent that the Titan is a relic of the past. It’s one of the only pickup trucks to come standard with a V8 engine.
Many truck enthusiasts love the V8, but most automakers have determined that it isn’t necessary to provide ample power. Today, there are plenty of hybrid V6 powertrains on the market that rely on electric motors for a nice boost in power. The Titan is the last of a dying breed. Even the Tundra gave up its V8 in favor of new V6 configurations.
The 2022 Nissan Titan starts at $40,605. The 2023 model year starts at $41,495. That’s a price increase of $890. The price hike may seem small, but when you consider how the Titan’s pricing compares to competitors, it’s a big deal.
The 2023 Ford F-150 starts at $34,085. It is practically guaranteed to outsell the Titan based on sales from previous model years. The F-150 has consistently been America’s favorite pickup truck. Kelley Blue Book estimates that the 2023 Ram 1500 will start at around $36,000. The Titan is more expensive than two of the most popular truck nameplates in the industry.
Is the Nissan Titan worth the money?

The Titan is a powerful pickup. It’s also a thirsty truck. The 2022 Nissan Titan uses a 5.6-liter V8 engine to make 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. The downside is that it only gets 16 miles per gallon in the city and 21 miles per gallon on the highway.
According to AAA.com. the national average gas price as of August 11th, 2022, is $3.990. The 2022 Titan has a 26.0-gallon gas tank. Based on the average gas price and the pickup’s tank size, it costs $103.74 to fill up on average in America.
Based on the Titan’s gas mileage, a full tank that costs $103.74 will get a driver about 481 miles of driving range. The average driver could easily spend upwards of $3K a year refueling the Titan based on the average miles driven annually and the current price of gas.
If the Nissan Titan was significantly reliable, its reliability could be a fair tradeoff for its high refueling costs. Unfortunately, Consumer Reports gave the latest Titan a low predicted reliability score. Drivers have also reported several Titan problems to CarComplaints.com regarding recent model years. The 2018 model year was particularly problematic. So in short, it’s tough to justify the new Titan’s starting price knowing that there are rivals that provide more value for the money.
Should you buy a 2023 Nissan Titan?
The Nissan Titan has its shortcomings, but there are perks to Titan ownership as well. The Titan has a smooth ride quality and comfy front seats.
The 2023 Nissan Titan may be comfortable and powerful, but the odds of it being a better buy than trucks from Ford and Ram are slim to none. According to GMAuthority.com, the 2023 Titan probably won’t include any major changes. TFLTruck.com expects nothing more than “minor tweaks” from the latest Titan model year. So, if you didn’t already have your mind set on buying a new Titan, there isn’t any update that makes the latest iteration worthy of consideration.
