“Attainable” and “dream car” are two concepts that typically don’t mesh because most dream cars are expensive. But some automakers break the mold by offering luxury and performance models at more affordable prices. One example is the Nissan Z, debuting in 1969. Although the beloved sports car went on a brief hiatus after the 2020 model year, it’s back with the seventh-generation 2023 Nissan Z. So, how attainable is this dream car?

2023 Nissan Z pricing

Nissan recently unveiled the seventh-generation Nissan Z, a sports car that chief operating officer Ashwani Gupta described as the “pure expression of thrill.” Following previous generations, the 2023 Z also appears to be affordable.

The sports car will be available in two main trim options: Sport and Performance. Pricing for the former starts at $39,990. Buyers who choose the Performance trim will have to pay $10,000 more.

In addition, expect a Proto Spec edition modeled after the 2020 Nissan Z Proto. This option will boast unique styling, including yellow brake calipers, exclusive leather seats, bronze-colored aluminum-alloy wheels, and a special plaque. Nissan says it will limit the Proto Spec to 240 units in the U.S. It’ll cost a bit more, with its $52,990 MSRP.

Other costs include shipping and handling, adding $1,025 to the final bill.

What we know about the new model’s features

Performance-wise, the 2023 Nissan Z seems to be a significant upgrade over the previous generation. The 2020 model offered a choice of two engines: 1 3.7-liter V6 making 332 hp and 270 lb-ft torque and a 3.7-liter option producing 350 hp and 276 lb-ft of torque.

The 2023 model packs a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 harnessing 400 hp in the Sports and Performance trims. As for the transmission, stick-shift enthusiasts can pick a six-speed manual, while others can go for the nine-speed automatic. Notably, the latter comes with paddle shifters.

Also, expect electronic power steering, a monotube shock absorber design, and double wishbone suspension on the front wheels. The drivetrain is rear-wheel drive.

Additionally, Nissan says it might offer a launch control system depending upon the trim and transmission.

The design also seems to be based on previous generations of the sports car. Consequently, it comes with a long, sleek hood and coupe styling. Nissan modernized the interior, but it retains some of the elements of the older models. For instance, three analog pod gauges are included.

The new model also features a 12.3-inch customizable TFT meter and a 9.0-inch touchscreen.

2023 Nissan Z release date

The 2023 Nissan Z is expected to reach U.S. dealerships this summer. Other sports cars that might debut during this time are the BMW i4 and Chevrolet Corvette Z06.

It’s worth mentioning that the nearly $40,000 price tag on the 2023 Nissan Z marks a significant jump from the 2020 model’s starting price. However, the industry has seen a lot of shifts since 2020 that have resulted in cars being generally more expensive.

Nevertheless, considering the performance and specs, $40,000 should still be a bargain.
