2023 Subaru Solterra EV: Expected Specs, Features, Overview
In the onslaught of many new electric vehicles, one of the latest EV models is the 2023 Subaru Solterra EV. The Solterra is the first electric vehicle from Subaru. Read more to find out what we know so far, including the price, specs, and features of the 2023 Solterra EV.
Subaru Solterra performance specs: Electric motor output, off-road features, and acceleration
The 2023 Subaru Solterra shares the same platform and powertrain with the 2023 Toyota bZ4X. It comes equipped with dual-electric motors, which generate a total system output of 215 horsepower and 249 lb-ft of torque.
For off-road use and driving in adverse weather conditions, all U.S.-spec Solterra models have an all-wheel drive system. The all-wheel drive system electronically distributes power to the electric motors at the front and rear of the vehicle. Additional off-road features include downhill assist control, hill-start assist, an X-Mode, and grip control. Later in the article, we further cover the X-Mode and grip control features.
In late 2021, for acceleration, the Solterra was expected to have a 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) time of 7.1 seconds. However, Car and Driver reports a 0-60 mph time of 6.5 seconds. If you’re hoping for Tesla-like acceleration for your electric vehicle, this relatively slower acceleration time may leave you a little disappointed.
Additional performance features include vehicle stability control, active cornering assist, all-speed traction control, and a regenerative braking system. Also, the Solterra has a four-wheel independent suspension.
Driving range, charging time, and MPGe for the Subaru Solterra
The 2023 Subaru Solterra EV has an estimated driving range of 228 miles for the Premium trim and 222 miles for the Limited and Touring trims. Also, this is the same range as the all-wheel drive versions of the Toyota bZ4X. However, for the front-wheel drive bZ4X, the range varies between 242 to 252 miles.
For charging capabilities, according to Subaru, the “Level 1 120V charger or a Level 2 240V charger” can charge the Subaru’s battery at the owner’s home. Also, like the bZ4X, the Solterra is able to reach an 80% charge in 30 minutes when using a DC fast charging station.
On the efficiency front, the Solterra Premium trim gets an estimated fuel economy of up to 94 city/114 highway/104 combined MPGe, while the Limited and Touring trims have efficiency ratings of 93 city/111 highway/102 combined MPGe.
What are the Subaru Solterra X-mode and Grip Control features?
The Solterra has an X-mode feature, which enables driving in slippery conditions and on uneven terrain — and a Grip Control feature, which provides enhanced traction for more hardcore off-road action. Also, the X-Mode has selectable driving modes with settings for snow, dirt, and mud.
As mentioned earlier, the American version of the Solterra EV has standard all-wheel drive. This makes sense, for Subaru, with its outdoors-focused vehicles, has standard all-wheel drive for all of its models in the U.S. — except for the BRZ sports car.
2023 Solterra technology features
For a more comfortable and convenient drive, the 2023 Solterra offers a variety of useful technology features. This includes a multimedia system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, a wireless smartphone charger, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a navigation system, and over-the-air updates.
Also, the Solterra has many safety-enhancing driving assistance technologies. This includes a pre-collision braking system, lane tracing assist, emergency steering assist, safe exit assist, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and dynamic radar cruise control. Also, for a clear view on all sides of the vehicle, the Solterra has a 360-degree panoramic view monitor.
How much does the 2023 Subaru Solterra cost?
According to Subaru, the 2023 Subaru Solterra trims start at the following MSRPs:
Premium: $44,995
Limited: $48,495
Touring: $51,995
These starting prices do not include a destination fee of $1,225. With the federal EV tax credit, the Solterra could be lower for some.
What do we know about the 2023 Subaru Solterra’s availability?
The 2023 Subaru Solterra EV’s expected availability was mid-2022, according to Subaru. However, as of 9/12/2022, Subaru’s site does not offer the ability to build and price the Solterra EV. Instead, there is a button to sign up for email updates on the vehicle. MotorTrend said that the Solterra EV is slated to go on sale in 2022 as a 2023 model.
