The New Toyota 4Runner Could Be a Mini 2023 Sequoia
Sources say a new Toyota 4Runner is on the way. The fabled off-roader is one of the most loved and most reliable SUVs. Rumors are swirling about a 2023 Toyota 4Runner SUV, but what does that have to do with the Toyota Sequoia?
Is the Toyota 4Runner the most reliable SUV?
The Toyota 4Runner SUV certainly ranks up there when it comes to reliable SUVs. Toyota SUVs, in general, are known to last a very long time, sometimes even more than 200,000 miles. Looking at the 2022 Toyota 4Runner reliability on Consumer Reports, the predicted reliability score is four out of five. The 2023 Toyota Sequoia has similar reliability.
With that said, the Toyota 4Runner is one of the more reliable SUVs on the market. The automaker is known for making vehicles that last a long time and are relatively inexpensive to fix. Using Toyota parts to fix the problem tends to keep the prices low. That is due to the abundance of available parts.
Looking back at the history of the Toyota 4Runner, it will likely retain the same amount of reliability. It would be unusual for the automaker to produce an unreliable SUV after many years of getting it right.
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner could be similar to the 2023 Toyota Sequoia
While the Toyota 4Runner is a pretty big SUV, it isn’t as big as the Toyota Sequoia. The Sequoia is all-around a bigger SUV with more room in the cabin and the cargo area. Due to that, it is also a bit heavier on the gas use but has more room inside for people and stuff. Those looking at the 4Runner can be relieved to know that it offers plenty of cabin and cargo space but is easier to drive and maneuver.
The 4Runner gets a strong 4.0L engine with 270 hp and 278 lb-ft, plus room for seven. It isn’t clear what the newest version will get yet. The 2023 Toyota Sequoia will have a bigger engine due to its increased size. It also has room for eight passengers and will likely have a less impressive fuel economy.
One major difference is the off-roading capabilities. The 4Runner is a bit more nimble due to its smaller size. It is known for going offroad, especially the TRD Pro versions. While the Sequoia is capable off-road, sometimes its size can get in the way. However, Toyota SUVs are a favorite for these kinds of adventures.
Toyota is likely focusing on the Tundra and Tacoma trucks right now
Toyota has given many of its well-loved vehicles a total redesign for this year. The Toyota 4Runner is probably going to get the same treatment. Compared to the designs of the new Toyota Tundra truck, Land Cruiser, and even the RAV4 SUV, the 4Runner simply looks outdated.
Plus, technology has come such a long way since the production of the fifth-generation Toyota 4Runner started. Toyota will probably plop a more efficient engine in and upgrade its off-road capabilities to make up for it. Toyota is likely focusing on the new Tacoma and Tundra trucks right now while it continues to improve the 4Runner in the background.
With all of the semiconductor chip shortages, it makes sense to take a little time to get the 2023 Toyota 4Runner right. As it is such a popular SUV, the automaker likely wants to be able to focus all of the available inventory on it when it does come out.
