Year-end and year out, the Toyota Camry remains near the front of the pack in the midsize sedan market. Even though the class continues to change as people switch to crossovers, the Camry puts up reliable sales numbers for Toyota and is one of the top-selling cars in its class. The current generation Camry carries over with few changes from its previous model year. The 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid gets 52 mpg combined

It’s no surprise that the Toyota Camry Hybrid gets the best gas mileage of any Camry. The EPA rates it at 51 mpg for the city and 53 mpg for the highway, for a combined average of 52 mpg. That gives the Camry Hybrid a range of up to 686 miles on a tank of gas and an estimated annual fuel cost of $1,050. 

The 2.5-liter four-cylinder combines with an electric motor to produce 208 total horsepower. Performance is adequate, but nothing to write home about. However, as hybrids go, it’s a particularly good one. Toyota has hybrid technology down to a science, and it shows. The Camry Hybrid was the runner-up in both U.S. News’ 2022 Best Hybrid or Electric Car for the Money and 2022 Best Hybrid or Electric for Families awards.

The standard 2023 Toyota Camry gets 32 mpg combined

The majority of buyers stick with the tried and true four-cylinder Toyota Camry. It uses a different version of Toyota’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes between 202 and 206 horsepower depending on drivetrain and trim options. It’s the standard engine across all models and is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models.

This engine option, when combined with the eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, gets 28 mpg city, 39 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined ratings. It will go over 500 miles on a tank of gas and cost about $1,750 a year to keep the tank full.

The best Toyota Camry model depends for you depends on your needs. If you want a hybrid, it’s one of the best on the market. Many hybrids, including the Toyota Prius, are hybrids first and cars second, which means there are tradeoffs in features in the name of fuel economy. The Camry Hybrid combines all of the Camry’s strong suits with exceptional fuel economy. It’s an extremely capable car that happens to also get 52 mpg. 

Still, for most people, the regular four-cylinder is the best option. Depending on the trim level, it’s $2,000 cheaper than a comparable hybrid. That is a chunk of change you can either put in the bank or splurge on a higher trim level Camry.
